How to finance a pirate ship

Pirates2

I blogged back in January about Somali pirates donating to the Haiti earthquake relief fund.

Now, UN Dispatch reveals further details of their business model:

To be eligible for employment as a pirate, a volunteer should already possess a firearm for use in the operation.

For this ‘contribution’, he receives a ‘class A’ share of any profit. Pirates who provide a skiff or a heavier firearm, like an RPG or a general purpose machine gun, may be entitled to an additional A-share. The first pirate to board a vessel may also be entitled to an extra A-share.

When ransom is received, fixed costs are the first to be paid out. These are typically:

Reimbursement of supplier(s)

Financier(s) and/or investor(s): 30% of the ransom

Local elders: 5 to 10 %of the ransom (anchoring rights)

Class B shares (approx. $15,000 each): militiamen, interpreters etc.

The remaining sum — the profit — is divided between class-A shareholders.

Count me in!

Not very good long term prospects though, and the chance of promotion are slim....

We were talking about what we'd do if the Eurolottery came up (v large win, £100m sort of thing).

Chap at work suggesting buying nice boat/yacht and fitting out with hidden heavy arms/rpgs etc etc, the go pirate hunting.

When finished doing that, go and count Jap whaling boats - using the same system they use to "count" whales - with a harpoon (though it'd need an expensive head to make sure of a "kill")

For a few million, you could BUY an ex navy gunboat, and just use that. What a great idea.

Or, HIRE the pirates, get them together for an "AGM" in a secret location, and blow them up with plastic explosives and ball bearings. No Pain, No Fuss!!

the employment part doesnt take into account several things like hat, cutlass, parrot, eye patch etc

and how much of the profit goes on rum?

its all the little things that add up.
