cheap DIY greenhouse irrigation system
02GF74 - 15/4/10 at 09:25 AM

need to go away but want to plant my tomato seedling in the green house.

has anyone devised a cheap irrigation system?

thinkig of getting some small bore hose from B&Q, dill a 1 mm hole in side so water flows out into grow bag and other end to a funnel outside to catch rain water.

so not fancy electronic controllers or connection to mains water.

obvioulsy a bit hit and miss in case is doesn't rain, but thiss is UK right?

2 litre pop bottle, you can buy (or make) little stakes that screw on top with small bore holes in, fill with water, stick in ground upside down. voila.
If I find a link to the 'made' ones i'll post it up later

I set up an irrigation system for mine last, went on holiday for week and cam back to house full of dead toms..

All gone to blight by lack of ventilation

Or, ask a neigbour / friend / family member (assuming you have atleast one of the above ) to pop round and water them

Hows about:

13 amp clockwork timer plug-> car battery charger -> car windscreen washer pump -> plants!

You'd need to use a giant trugg of water as the water source though, or a water butt.

I'd use a valve out of the back of a washing machine hooked up to your outside tap. They're solenoid controlled, usually mains input, so just hook a plug straight up to it (make sure the terminals are well insulated!) and plug that straight into your timer.

Disclaimer: be very careful about leaks. Water and electricity together is not a good combination. Use an RCD and earth all metal parts well, including making sure your house plumbing has a good earth.

mine runs a pump, onto a 20mm poly water board type pipe
holes drilled into it, and 2.5mm bore air line takes it to the plants
works quite well, just a simple timner to start it once a day
the poly pipe returns back to the tank, as the pump is a bit too big

I just plant my toms outside

Still get walloped by blight though
