ive opened one with a tenner, if thats to far to stretch you could open it with that then withdraw it.

Banks are quite nice about stealing any amount of money you may have. I am sure you will be made to feel welcome, once they think you have more than that 50p you plan to put in that one day... If they think 50p is all you've got, they won't give you the time of day. Dress well, it helps your cause.

Girlfriend has just opened an account with

She has no passport or drivers license, took no bills as they are not in her name - just her P60. No deposit required to open account.

Edit - It's a basic account, also has online banking, debit card - No fees.

Halifax are fairly straightforward, and only require a token first payment. However, like most banks, you won't get much benefit until you put regular money in, e.g. £1,000 or more per month.

Avoid Barclays, for quite few reasons... such as incompetence, indifference, Indian help desks, etc., etc...

^^^^ no; as per first post. It is not for saving; just to get 8 digit account and 6 digit sort code to complete paypal verification.

intention is to have a couple of quid in there at most.

If you do that, ie; make the balance zero, they will automatically assume that youi have closed the account and do it for you anyway.
Always leave a balance, Ideally a positive one but a negative one will also keep it open, unfortunately.
