I hate DIY, I love DIY

The good news. When I was tidying out my loft in my new home I found a painted enamel shop sign (circa 1920) for "Emu Australian Burgandy". Very nice. Very little damage too!! Just checked and they're rare as hen's teeth and one with quite a bit of damage sold in Australia for 3750 Aus$ (£2250GBP) which makes mine worth a little bit more even if I flogged it down under. Nice

The bad news (other than the fact I wanted to keep the sign and now my wife wants to sell it to buy cushions ), I was stripping the ceiling in my bathroom (someone had painted it gloss so jack shite stuck to it in terms of paint).... I managed to spend four hours scrapping the shitty paint and underlying lining paper off the ceiling. And guess what is underneath.... another bloody glossy layer of painted lining paper. Aaaaaaah. Think I might follow suit and just paper it and paint it satin!!! This is doing my head in!! I just wanted to get down to bare plaster so I could skim it....

Oh the joys....

Though to counter balance that I've just found a £10 off voucher for Dominos pizza sos I've managed to blag all this for £15.25

Large Pepporoni passion pizza with olives
3* 1.25L Coke
1* 1.25L Fanta
2* 500ml Malvern

I'm not that thirsty BTW, just couldn't find anything to make it up to the minimum £25 other than pop that I actually wanted. Bought the cookies last time I did this deal and they were shite!

Even if I could be arsed to drive to the local place to collect it their cheapest deal is a Large for £11.... Hope that learner moped driver isn't too much of a beginner. Going to be 6kg of fluid in that pizza hatch!! Should make going round corners fun....

Here comes another 4 hours of fun with that bloody ceiling

why dont you just over board the ceiling with plasterboard fixed with screws and then scim it?
simples.

^^^^^^

Likewise, either board it over and new plaster or rip it off, re-board and new plaster.

Life's just too short for that kind of agravation - especially when you've just "found" the cash to pay the builders

I would if I could but the ceiling has a nasty little curve at one end where the roof dips down so it'd be a PITA to do.

But it's tempting compared to this

Danozeman - 10/5/10 at 03:52 PM

could you not just pva it and skim over the top?

i was doing a house like that. My solution (not done yet) is to baton the sloping bit and do it with a crease in the plasterboards rather than a bend. Maybe some drywall adhesive behind the cut to strengthen it.

norfolkluego - 10/5/10 at 06:38 PM

Hammerite !
Stick to anything, it will look like sh*t mind, not sure it's designed for ceilings

skydivepaul - 10/5/10 at 06:38 PM

sell the sign and pay someone else to do the ceiling!!

BenB - 10/5/10 at 09:41 PM

Yes, good old PVA. I ran up my dad and he said that as well. So if tommorow when I have a shower all the plaster falls off the ceiling it's out with the PVA!!

50% off dominos? Wow. Looks like that's lunch tommorow sorted!!!
