adding numbers

Can you do this simple calculation without any pen and paper or a pocket calculator?
Do it as fast as you can.

1000 add 40
add another 1000
add 30 and again 1000
add 20
another 1000 and add 10

you have found 5000

YOU DUMBO

The correct outcome is 4100!

No wonder that Locost is never gonna be finished

I've done it in my head and on a calculator and it still comes to 5000.

What am I missing?

"1000 add 40
add another 1000
add 30 and again 1000
add 20
another 1000 and add 10 "

Theres no add between 30 and again 1000, so its two sums

Don't worry Chris, you are in good company. I have done it forwards and backwards and also get 5000.

Cita, what gives? Is it a joke?

Very clever

I got 5000 first time around!

For those who're confused - forget the instructions, just add up the numbers you see...

4 x 1000
and
10 + 20 + 30 + 40
equals 4100!

ChrisG
Is that the same Yorkshire calculator you use to add up the Locost Club £10's ?

Dave

What got me is, 10 + 20 + 30 +40 = 100 not 1000

flak monkey - 17/5/04 at 08:09 PM

Very clever... but i did get 4100...

Its just how its worded...the words are just there to confuse you...

As DJ says...just do the numbers you see and ignore the words...

if the sum had been left a sum then you would have all got it right, but the supposed answer was below and even if you hadn’t consciously seen it you eyes will have, moving you toward thinking it was 5000

Peteff - 18/5/04 at 09:44 AM

If you added the 1000's and then the tens it's 4100 first time. I think it's autosuggestion if you get it wrong.

Cita - 18/5/04 at 04:06 PM

Sorry for my poor English guys but it has nothing to do with the total being exposed.
The trick is that most of us (including me!)
going from 3090 + 10 = 4000 instead of 3100 as we all (?) know is the correct sum

It has something to do with our brain being ordered to "think" what is most likely instead of what actualy is.

Try write something simple as your own name while standing up and figure small circles with your right foot. There are only two possibility's,you stop making circles and go to a liniar movement or...
IT'S BLOODY IMPOSSIBLE TO READ YOUR OWN HANDWRITING
