So what's your favourite dance music then?
Jasper - 27/5/10 at 09:47 AM

Ok, so following on from the Leftfield thread, why don't we have a dedicated dance music thread. What dance music do you like, who's your favourite DJ's live, and name some really great tunes. It's grey and raining here in my shop today, so I can play some banging classics while I work

So I'm foremost a Drum and Bass lover, all the Hospitality DJ's especially at the moment, along with of course Andy C, Chase and Status, Netsky, Hazard, Friction, Hype, Ed Rush, LTJ Bukem, Sub Focus etc etc

Also love Psytrance, I love the crowd you get in Brighton for these nights, really hippy and laid back, always a great night out with the glow sticks!

Like a bit of hard house and techno, Andy Weatherhall and stuff like that, and of course the master that is Carl Cox - been seeing him since he started out down at the Zap club in Brighton in the late 1980's.

The wife and I go out dancing about once every 6-8 weeks these days, but becuase we live in Brighton we can pick and choose as we get such great club night down here.

Worzey - 27/5/10 at 09:53 AM

Too many favorites to mention Always liked Inner City, Expansions, Shades of Rhythm, Joss Wink, ......

I used to go clubbing in Brighton 4-5 times a week back in the early 90's. The club scene was fantastic.

I met SWMBO at Paradox almost 15 years ago

Oh the memories.......

cd.thomson - 27/5/10 at 09:58 AM

a hospitality fan. I never would have guessed!

I'm quite into my fidget house, hostage - shake it .

I'm just coming out of the dubstep scene, joker or vex'd used to be my favourite producers. Probably going to Outlook festival this year.

boys noize/crookers/crystal castles/the twelves for my electro fix. Possibly also going to EXIT too.

Its got to be prodigy/pendulum for all time favourites though

P.S. can I also have your mini?!

TimC - 27/5/10 at 10:31 AM

Loads of stuff I love but Stardust; Music Sound Better With You always raises a smile. Likewise, I cant keep still to Daft Punk; Face to Face. Then there's Benga; 26 Basslines... then there's Lost Tribe*; Gimme A Smile (The Delorme Vs Dharma Bums Remix). I could go on...

Someone mentioned hidden bass on the other thread. Try Alex Reece; Pulp Fiction if you have audio kit that can get low enough. Mega.

Give me some old school Trance and I'll be happy

YQUSTA - 27/5/10 at 10:57 AM

I think out of my personal collection Thomas Schumacher 'When I Rock' has to be one of the best hard house tunes.

Linky

Also you can never forget the late great Tony De Vit 'Are you all ready'

Linky

Drum and base I have to say DJ Hype's 'ready or not' remix is awesomeness.

Linky

So many more but remembering all the names is hard now

And what's wrong with a little Progressive / Goa trance I ask?

My god, I've still got that accordion based euro trash running around my head, that was truly the most awful thing I've ever heard in a club!!

I love a bit of Goan Trance, was in Goa in February and went to one of the famed headphone parties on the headland, I was giving it the full hippie floaty arm treatment!!!

Liking both Alex Reece and Lost Tribe, gonna try some more now, keep 'em coming ....

nick205 - 27/5/10 at 11:46 AM

Underworld
Sasha
Andy Weatherall
Ozric Tentacles

i did exit in 2007 and my one recommendation would be.....don't

the organisation at the festival wasn't great and the rush of massive pilled up serbians for prodigy on the first night was really poorly managed. i saw at least 3 people pushed to the floor and semi trampled. we retreated to the food court and watched from there. (snoop dogg was absolutely awesome though, as were the beastie boys)

i disliked novi sad as much as the festival, but belgrade was quite pleasant for a few days.

if you must go, take mylar survival blankets to pin to the outside of your tent. there was no shade for the camping and it was about 40 degrees when we were there.

Andi - 27/5/10 at 12:01 PM

Goa and psy for sure, Prodigy, DJ Funk... (Detroit techno and not usually my cup of tea stylee music, but great for a laugh and the memories).

Gabba and anything dark for when Im driving and suicidal lol.
LTJ Bukem (top bloke in person too).
Liberator brothers, Paul Damage (House of God).

Those years are a blur and have almost left my memory (whats left of it). But are firmly in my soul

cheers tom, thats good to know. Another friend had a bad experience with false drug accusations from the local pigs so I'm put off the idea.

I'll investigate benicassim/sziget instead.

BenB - 27/5/10 at 12:09 PM

Went to the full moon at Koa Phangan back in 2003 and there was a bar at one end of the beach playing progressive trance Ah the memories!!!!! Spent about 3 hours there before heading off the beach in search of various things including some faster BPMs.... But that first bit- lying on the beach with some buckets of love listening to some Progtrance sure took some beating. I'm told the hangover should wear off soon......

Thing is... I don't dance to 'dance music' anymore. I tend to just listen to it in the car and nod along to it.

The strange thing is... I used to listen to rock music in the car and nod along to it. Now I dance about like a loony to a good rock tune!

Jasper - 27/5/10 at 01:11 PM

Its funny you know, you say you like Drum and Bass to most people, even a lot of young people, and they turn there nose up.

But some of the new Drum and Bass around these days is so well produced, some of it lighter and trancy and others really deep and funky it's have a huge revival, lots of airplay on daytime radio, not just specialist shows, and bands like Pendulum (hardly DnB any more though, more rock inspired) and Chase and Status doing big live shows.

I went to see Pendulum at Brixton Academy last year (seen 'em about 8 times all told, DJ and live sets), they recorded it for the DVD that night, and it was truly the most enegry I've ever seen in one room, everybody was bouncing right to the very back, here's a taster:

3 years ago when i told people at university I was a basshead 9 times out of 10 they assumed I was a pillhead too and got some pretty random/harsh reactions!

Now I go to a dnb/dubstep night and I swear most people there don't know whos playing/whats going on, the genre has become so "scene" recently and the cool kids have latched on to it, swamping it out.

I think I'm lucky down here, it's a very DnB town and nites like Shogun and Hospitality always get sold out in advance to a very dedicated crowd, we see the same people night after night.

Though I know what you mean, there are more of the Brighton Beautiful kids going these days as it's got more popular.

Been getting into a bit of Dubstep lately, and they often play a few tunes on DnB nights, though I can't quite bring myself to go to a full Dubstep night, though I'm loving that Nero track posted up earlier .... my stepdaughters loves Nero ..

Once the respective wheels are sorted out, we'll have to shake-up the RGB paddock with some tunes.

My nero tune the isnt dubstep version is it???

I hope not, I'm not a fan of Dubstep, it never really kicks in.........

Jasper - 27/5/10 at 01:45 PM

Not sure if the Nero one is full Dubstep, but it's certainly got a Dubstep feel to it. I know what you mean about Dubstep, whenever they play it at DnB night I'm always waiting for the big drop and speed up that never comes!!

Jasper - 27/5/10 at 02:45 PM

Well, I get it, but it's not for me, to much thrash and not enough beat, if that makes sense!! Mind you, it would send me mental if I listened to it to much

TimC - 27/5/10 at 02:49 PM

Yeah - sorry Steve, the best thing in that vid for me was the circuit!

coozer - 27/5/10 at 03:02 PM

Well, the circuit is absolutely useless when there's a 'fest on.

I've seen them live and they were awesome! Shame they split

Best dance act I may have seen was the Prodigy at Leeds, thing is, they sounded like a metal band!

My late teens/early 20s conisided with Garage, so thats where my dance heart lies. I used to DJ Garage and funky house but also loved house classics of the mid 90s.
I have some mixes somewhere il dig them out and link them for anyone who wants to relive some flavas.

I like all the links and music but I don't understand what half of you are saying in your posts! Must be getting old!

I got all my old Ibiza cd's and some of my pirate radio tapes from the 80's! Just can't find a tape player!

Anyone know of a device to make tapes into digital files?

morcus - 28/5/10 at 01:23 AM

For converting tapes, you can use audacity (You can download it free, I got it from a link posted on this forum) but the quality will depend on how you wire up your cassette player. I did it with a fairly new cassette player through a wire normally used to link an MP3 player to a car stereo and the sound was awful, yet I used my USB record player through Audacity (The program that came with it needed Itunes which I don't want) and the sound is great (Even though the LP was 20 years older than the cassette and scratched).

I'm not really a dance music fan but I do listen to some dance music, I sometimes drive to Speed Garage when its on. Most of my Dance music is from the 80's, I've got dance remixs on vinyl from groups like the Cure, New Order, Franky goes to hollywood.

morcus - 28/5/10 at 01:25 AM

I really Like Swede Mason's stuff which is sort of dance music.
