Sky+ box issues
omega 24 v6 - 20/6/10 at 03:59 PM

Twice now my thomsons sky+ box has shut itself down after watching a recorded programme. When you press backup on the handset to go back to the recorded page and try to delete the prog you have just finished watching,it has turned itself off. The first time it was for a few minutes and came back on this time it has gone off and so far it won't come back on.
The on off switch light is on red(standby) and the handset is putting out a signal as the light on the front off the box is flashing. Even pushing the buttons on the front of the box manually does nothing . Neither does turning it off completely at the wall and then turning it back on.
Is there an issue with these boxes?
Anyone on here an engineer with any ideas?

this is just one of many reasons why I have just cancelled my sky and gone to virgin. 7 years with sky and nothing but problems all the way. Good ridence to them.........

mine did the same thing. a new box was the cure

Mine's playing up at the moment and I spoke to a Sky engineer about it on Friday. For the effort and cost it makes sense for me to call the engineer. It's £65 and can be less if you complain enough - free sometimes. The repair is then covered - no matter what the issue. If it needs a new box (even if you bought it elsewhere) it's covered. If it's cabling, dish, lnb etc...all covered. Not only that but the work is warranted too, so if that goes wrong it's a free visit to sort it again.

I'm not saying it's an amazing service - we're all paying at least £10 every month and if we can't watch we shouldn't pay but....I priced up a decent LNB at £35. If I fit that and it doesn't fix it I'm back to square one. For worst scenario another £30....

My HD box is Amstrad and some slate the box, Thomson have the same image, some love them some slate them. At the cost of a new box I'd ring up, kick off and demand it's sorted or you'll leave....

I might be trying the very same myself...

the power supplies are usually the culprit in these boxes.

pace are the best ones like this if you are not under guarantee any more, buy the pace then have your card paired to the new box.

cheers

Mmm power light comes on and you can hear the hard drive(well one of them) starting up. troubles is it is 80% full of unwatched progs
Still not on

Well you can probably recover the programmes - you take the HD out of the current box and back it up onto a pc with some free software off the 'net. then reload it in the format required for the new box either onto the new box's HD or fit the old HD into the new box.

I did this last year and was able to transfer all my stuff off the old HD onto a 500GB HD and at the same time make it understood by the new pace box which has run great ever since.

I would have to do a bit of research to remember what the software was called but all the info is available for googling.

You will need a Hard drive caddy probably too.

Cheers

Mooky

Edit: Linky to software

Have pressed the backup button while turning it on at the wall and its now in software update

mookaloid - 20/6/10 at 05:39 PM

i hope that doesn't wipe the hard drive

Mmmph it's just came back on OK again. After 3 goes at a software update I gave up and left it. young lad came in and pressed the button and hey presto we have sky.
The recorded stuff is all still there as well.

Our box has been playing up for last 2 weeks. Guy came this morning and replaced it. Very nice guy, took him about 20minutes. Unfortunately we lost everything in Planner (whole new series of 24) but oh well. We have a working tv
Wish i'd known i could keep it somehow before today

As mentioned the Thomson boxes have psu issues (cheoap caps) which can be cured with a replacement psu.

Symptoms are going into standby and not wanting to come out of it, no signal being reported, missed recordings etc etc.

Is it a HD box or just vanilla sky+?

Non HD so why is it working again for the second time if the caps are bust?

mine used to go flaky on and off - which I thought was due to overheating in the psu as cooling there seems to marginal.

OK so maybe i'll take a look inside when swmbo is out and the tv is off
