Making a metal fence
m8kwr - 1/7/10 at 09:31 AM

Hi,

I have some spare steel lying about gathering rust, so have thought about making a fence for the front of the house.

I wanted something simple, straight lines etc., but she doesn't. I wanted to construct something like this

My only concern is the bends, and making so many of them exactly the same.

Can anyone suggest what I could potentially bend them with, in a locost style

would something like this do the trick Link

And what thickness of the steel tubing would people recommend

thanks

I'd use plain steel round bar, and use one of these to bend it..

Bender Linky (no, not Futurama)

I've got the bench-mounted version - very useful. I should add that I didn't pay that much for mine! I got it on special offer a few years back.

round bar doesn't kink when you bend it. Weight is not a problem in a fence. Do you have an old disposable welding gas bottle? They're quite tough. Clamp your bar and the bottle in a vice and bend the bar by hand round the bottle. The bar will probably spring back a bit but all the bars will be the same.

^^ ditto

make a round former of some kind and just bend round steel bar (not pipe/tube) by hand - you'll get it near enough the same every time.

Have a look at the pool fencing design on this website.

I used to work for these boys a few moons ago.
use 8 or 10 round and make a panel jig with pegs. posts go for a 40 0r 50 square and dont skimp on the thickness as it will rust away quickly if its thin.
