Magic Trick (sort of)
liam.mccaffrey - 21/7/10 at 09:53 PM

get a piece of copper or ali thick wall tube and drop a neodymium magnet down the middle.

hours of fun, i can't stop doing it!

if you haven't got the gear to try search Eddy current damping

It's evil. Burn it, burn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Science is Cool! -

Get two large washers,
Connect a wire to each,
separate the washers slightly using insulating strips (1mm thick),
connect the wires to a laptop charger (the use of a female adapter (maplin) is handy, - i think the laptop charger i used was about 19V output
submerge the washers in water with a little backing soda,
bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen will form on the surface
cover ears...
add match ... BANG hours of fun

dip the copper tube in liquid nitrogen and youll have days of fun

blakep82 - 21/7/10 at 10:30 PM

there;s anti gravity at work right there!

matt_gsxr - 21/7/10 at 10:31 PM

Real men do it with superconducting MRI scanners.

Obviously, steel would not be a good idea.

That is awesome!!!

blakep82 - 21/7/10 at 10:35 PM

what does the liquid nitrogen do then?

Thats awesome.
- Never done it, but im tempted to get a magnet and some tube now!

Yeh- that's got me interested Got some of that hanging around at work

ermmm

no this is fun.

get some iodine tincture from your local vet place.

add a little hydrocloric acid.

this brings the crystals to the top. get them out using filtration.

now add around 1 tablespoon of crystals into a plastic container.

dont worry its safe so far.

add 50ml of ammonium hydroxide.

stir till no more bubbles are made.

and then paint on someones car door or on stones on a drive or on peoples milk bottles.

the size of a 1/4 of a 5p piece will sound like a little fire cracker when touched and not hurt them just give people a shock :O)

have fun.

then when your bored make thermite :O)

oooooo that sounds like fun - what strength of HCL?

David Jenkins - 22/7/10 at 12:15 PM

Is that nitrogen tri-iodide?

Made that stuff as a teenager... blogs of it, surrounded by blobs of jam. It was my way of getting revenge on wasps.... Mwahahahaha!

IIRC nitrogen cools the copper thus becomes more conductive ( so resists the magnet more ) cetainy the reason to keep super computers cool is

A stop the tracks melting but as the copper is better an conducting electricity you can get the on / off signals closser to gether therefor more data.

remembered from doing Computer studies at school 22 ( yikes !!!) years ago !!

surely that level of magnetic radiation is harmful?

iank - 22/7/10 at 05:30 PM

Big magnet dragging aluminium and copper around using eddy currents.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DUD5WIwUAo

iirc they use this effect to separate aluminium drinks cans from plastic at recycling plants.

Edit: youtube even has a video
