Looking at getting our driveway block paved to replace the scabby 30yr old tarmac.
Roughly 40m sq with 1 manhole cover to deal with.
I'd be looking to hire a skip and draft in some mates labour to remove the old tarmac and dig out/prepare the site then get a contracter to lay
the base and blocks.
Any idea what sort of costs I'm looking at?
And can anyone recommend a contracter in the Southampton/Hampshire area?

That's a good start.
I wouldnt pay any more than 2.
I knocked our guy down from £1800.
And i got him to put in a ground anchor.

Look on flebay for marshalls blocks they sometimes do great deals, but you have to be patient and bid for the right price - I got mine cheap and delivered.
I know its of no help to you but in South Africa it would cost around 600 pounds 
83sq m cost us 5 grand all in Inc other little bits needed.
I had 2 drives done about 100 Sq M, cost £6k, then it sunk in several places, and looks a proper mess now, do go and see some older work you chosen
contractor has done, to see how well it stands up.
We did the court thing and won our money back, but £10 a month is next to f*****g useless!
Be very carefull who you get to do the base as many will not prepare properly and the blocks will sink arter a few months. Cheapest is not always best
in long run! I would ask for references or find a drive nearby that has been down for a while and find out who did the work.
There are so many rogue firms out there so be carefull. Mine has been down at least 3 yrs and is still in good shape.
Dont dismiss the concrete patterned driveways, check the cost on them. they aint going to sink and i suspect would be faster to lay too = less inconvenience for you.

The problem with concrete pattern is if any services that run underneath need attention then you're in for a heap of pain and expense to get it
done again.
Also any oil leaks on a block drive can often be fixed by simply flipping a couple of blocks over or replacing them from the spares you should be
stashing away.
having a patterned concrete driveway is like driving a Boxster, it may look good but everyone will see you cannot afford the real thing.

Some people round the corner from us have had theirs done recently and the guys made an excellent job of it... I think I can find out who did it if
you like.
