Using mobile phone in the USA
russbost - 4/10/10 at 08:41 AM

Going for a couple of weeks in the States & Hawaii shortly - I shall be leaving my normal phone with someone here who'll be running the business in my absence.
I have a quad band, unlocked phone to take with me & was hoping to pickup a pay as you go Sim out there to use whilst on hols, hence being able to call locally for services without having to pay for calls going back & forth to UK all the time, I will need to call the UK a few times whilst away, but this should be pretty low useage, just a couple of mins each tiime.

How easy is it to pickup a Sim card out there, have I got to go to a mobile phone shop or do they have them at supermarkets/newsagents etc., or is there anyway I can get one b4 I go? & any recommendations for best/cheapest network for useage described?

Any info much appreciated!

I was working in new orleans and got my pay as u go phone from wallmart and it was virgin and i am sure they done sim cards also if not just buy the phone to get the sim card as its all very cheap.

Russ I used a tuyo card in the usa, just does normal calls (no data service) but instead of £1+ per minute its only 10c per minute to anywhere in the world. Bought mine on ebay for £7 and came with $10 credit. Top up online before u go. Make sure the seller sells it as activated or you will have trouble. Card came from a seller in New York.
Ive tried lots of options, been to the states 7 times and this is the cheapest

when I was there (for 2 year) the misses used PAYG and the sim was free when she bought $10 credit from Walmart I think. Easy as Pie

I've been to USA recently, my BB did not work at all there so I ended up buying a cheap phone and SIM card package from Walmart, $30 for the phone/SIM(with $15 of airtime). Make sure you buy one that allows international calls, the cheaper ones are only $8 but don't do international.
