Credit card Spammed
T66 - 21/10/10 at 04:51 PM

Just had an automated telephone call from my banks fraud computer....

Apparently some theiving sh1te in Manchester tried to buy £314 goods on my card and was declined.

Some plank topped up their O2 account for £15

And also paid the AA £188

I now find out from my 20 year old, never ever use the "pay at the pump" option at the fillling station.

Apparently its rife, even LLoyds told me the same when I rang them.

My card is never ever out of my sight.

I would have thought pay at pump was more secure.

intrested in the background in that one as I fill up at pay at pump at asda ( only option ) it is also the standard in europe

I would have thought the pay at the pump was the safest way too.

do explain

unless the card slot is compromised then I would expect this to be safer because no-one but you handles the card. There is no chance to take a second skim of the card. The only chance is if the machine on the pump gathers the card details during the day and the purchases are manually processed "out of hours"

Quick net search reveals this...

Other than filling up lots using pay at the pump, my card never leaves my sight, and believe it doesnt , I am very careful.

How do you like this.
I've never used my lloyds Amex or Mastercard account in any terminal.
I informed the creditcard company that I'm going away and then on the day of my flight someone bought something for £1200 in PC world and two payments of £510 to Cuny College Jamaica.
This means only one possibility, someone in the creditcard company did it!
I got a refund but they cancelled my cards so no back up on holiday in orlando.
Luckily I don't trust cards and had travellers cheques.

Doesnt sit with me getting spammed by a thief. Bastards...

What really pee's me off is that a secure solution already exists - someone invented a system where you put your card into a gizmo, enter your PIN, and it gives you a one-time credit card number. It works once, then is rejected if used again.

It really isn't tough to do - I have a Citrix dongle tha gives me secure remote access to our company network, which is a similar idea - but no-one seems keen to take it on.

Barclays have a gadget to control on-line access in a similar way, but no-one wants to take the first step...

Mine got done a couple of years ago, some cheeky sod even paid a council bill with mine. It's a card I only ever use for buying stuff for the car online, never had a problem as always tend to use the same suppliers....and then.....
got done for using a bus lane in London, I just got lost and ended up in it. Threatening letter from said council, paid with that credit card, scammed the next day. Not putting two and two together but. Insider job I'm sure and not that uncommon according to my CC company.

I was going to challenge the fixed penalty but they sent me a nice photograph of me stopped behind a bus just in front of giant letters on the road saying BUS LANE, even I had to admit they had a point.

I have a secure paypal card now, everytime I log in you have to push a button on the card and type in the next number displayed as well as you password; just like the VPN key (though mine changes it's number every minute rather than a button)
