Removing a siliconed in basin waste. Is it going to be a problem?
John P - 21/10/10 at 06:00 PM

A couple of weeks ago I replaced our old basin waste with a new "Press Up" unit from Wickes. It's complete rubbish and won't pop up.

Looking on the Wickes website it seem everone is having the same problem and replacing them.

Problem is that when I fitted it I bedded it on some silicone mastic to make sure I got a water tight seal.

Havent tried yet but knowing how difficult silicone is to get off am I going to have a real problem getting the thing out without damaging the basin?

John.

I imagine if you just psuh hard it will come off ok.

I doubt you would get silcon eater to the silicon really as its a long thin contact patch.

I'm sure you can get silicone eater at most DIY stores - also available thorugh Kleeneeze if that's any use (and no, I'm not a rep). Smells of lemons...
Combined with a very sharp blade such as a scalpel it works well.

you could probably slip a 10 thou feeler blade under the edge to help cut the silicone if it's really stuck
