My 'big' computer has finally rolled over and gone to sleep. It's rather old in puter-years so the time has come to buy a new one.
I seem to recall someone on here builds/sells puters. I've done the rounds on Ebuyer and the likes, but got overwhelmed with jibberish that is way beyond my tiny little brian.
What I want is a fairly basic machine. I need a new flat monitor (about 19-20".
I don't do any gaming just a tiny bit of video editing, surfing and basic putery stuff.
Any suggestions?

Dell, I get most of my machines from there, they have all been very reliable and very cheap. You can't built a basic machine for what they can sell them for.

Never owned a dell, but my mate who is a bit of a PC wizz swears by Dell.

Good backup when they break too apparently.

My home PC is virtually redundant now as we all have laptops, would a decent laptop fit fit the bill ?

the 'James' ( I will bet its not his real name ) on the helpdesk was very good when power supply on parents laptop whent pop.

1 call 10 min resoloution 1 new power supply 24 hours later and a call to check all ok.

the good thing with dell is the drivers on the website type the assett tag in and they are all there

i get discount on Dell's if you can find a model i can find out whether i can get some discount on it

We use DELL to run our powerstation and they are very good. We have about 12 units running and they rarely go wrong, but, although they advertise a puter for £179, by the time you've got through checkout, it's up to £400! I'm thinking
COMPAQ SG3-220UK with a 20" monitor for £299. Any good? Or pay another £100 for the DELL?

If it was me I would buy a Apple. I have still got my first Apple computer from 10 years ago and it works a treat.

Yes they are a couple of hundred pounds extra but you'll have a cutting edge machine that is a stylish addition to your home that is reliable. It will just work and 90% of the software you use comes built in and costs nothing. Go to a Apple store and see the quality yourself and talk to staff. Then go to PC world and check the quality. You could talk to the staff but they won't know the answers anyway.

For me its just a no-brainer.

As a home machine its got to be a Mac

I have a Dell that has been totally reliable for the last 3 years.
On the down side, I couldn't remember how to do a head clean on the printer (senior moment that has now passed) so I rand Dell. they were very helpful, up to the point when they said they could tell me how to do that 'no problem', It would just cost me £49.
You can imagine the reply to that.

If you just want a cheap box and not a gaming machine the £229 machine on ebuyer is good. My wife got one a couple of months ago and we put windows 7 on it. It has been all good so far.

Personally, Mac every time but if cost is an issue PC..

I'd love a Mac but as pennies are scarce at the moment, it will have to be cheap and cheerfull!
