Have i knackered my fridge?
locoboy - 7/11/10 at 12:38 PM

I have one of these fridge freezerslinky

I was defrosting the freezer section with an ice scraper and i punctured the ally skin inside the freezer compartment and the refridgerant started to escape!

Is this sort of damage repairable these days or is it a new fridge freezer ?

Cheers - oh i got one hell of a bollocking and a big 'I told you so' in reference to melting it to defrost it!

You're not the first (man) to do that and you won't be the last... mind you I've only done it the once

I did that a couple of months ago 'saving time' with a hammer and chisel!!! Really!

No I wouldn't use the above tools on a fridge of that value!

Hair dryer or even better a heat gun if you have one.

Don't know if you can repair it.

Its had it. I did it using a knife to defrost mine. Just after id been shopping a bought a load of frozen food!! Im aging the bollocking i got.

Best way is to turn it off over night with the door open.

Banjaxed it I'm afraid, years ago when I was a fridge engineer there were a few repair kits to fix this sort of damage but I never had any joy. Once the gas escapes moisture gets into the system and no amount of vac pumping gets it out and gives a long term fix.
Might be worth calling a local Smeg repair guy and finding the cost of a new evaporator with fitting.
Cheers,
Bob

Why was there Ice to scrape away. It says from the link it is Frost Free. Never had any Ice build up with our frost free fridges.

I used to use a steamer to defrost ours. I would say its booolixed could probably have it soldered but not sture whether anyone would regas it

My wife is a serial fridge killer - she's killed 2 of 'em in that way and they were both stone dead by the time she was finished! I try not to leave her alone with sharp objects now

If it was icing up the drain could be blocked with crap......but its dead......so thats a thing of the past

Frost is different to "Ice" apparently. Ive had that argument before.

Skip it. Youll not get it repaired within a reasonable budget for a new one.
