Background: Most 0870 or other Premium rate numbers have an alternative landline (or better still Freephone!) number. The premium line is just a
'virtual' aleternative that just hangs off the physical landline that's actually there.
If you know the landline number you can phone this instead and you still go through and speak to the same people. Just for free instead of whatever
ridiculous price they conjured up!
I just had to phone my car insurance people. The phoneline is 8p per minute! :-o That's an expensive way to listen to Greensleeves!
Just thought I'd recommend this website as I use it quite a lot.

Follow the link and click the 'find an alternative number' link near the top right.
If you put your 0870 or other Premium number in then it will show you a list of alternatives. The list is user generated so there are not always
alternatives but I've been lucky 80+% of the time.
Hope that helps!

James

Nice one James. that is the one I've been looking for.
Funny how all these 0870 numbers came out just as phone providers started offering free daytime calls.

Also works with 0800 0844 and 0845 (and most other non geographic numbers) which although they are cheap/free usually aren't included for
"free" minutes on mobile contracts.

Yup, I've used it quite a few times and it's worked each time for me.
The sad fact is that BT is flogging 0300 numbers now that they've converted people to paying extra for a package with free 0800/40/70 numbers.
However, 'say no to 0870' does and wll for the moment still help save call costs.
