Roofer help wanted
jacko - 19/12/10 at 09:35 AM

Hi All - the house my Mum and Dad live in is a semi de detached one half is a council house my dads is private
The council have re-roofed their side and altered the profile off the beams this has made there roof tiles higher at the joint
Their answer to get the joint right is to put what looks like flash- band down the roof joint about 18ins wide

My dad is complaining to the council So what do you think he should be asking them to do to put this right or is this normal practice on roofs
Thankyou for any help

Personally, I'm an advocate of putting such a break in.

In all probability, it'll be a hidden gutter detail, either in lead or preformed GRP. The latter usually has a preformed upstand so if it doesn't it's probably lead.

The good thing about such a detail as it's a very definite way of defining where each roof stop and where the other starts.

The reason for the differing profile is probably down to using counter battens and tile battens where they may not have existed previously. It all depends on the original construction of the roof.

If you're able to provide a reasonable quality pic of the junction, it would help greatly, but such a detail can be a bonus rather than a problem.

If it is a flash band, then it is worthy of complaint as there are off the shelf solutions which give a far better detail, as above.

if it is a stick on flashband type thing then don't accept it, as said above there are proper detail solutions none of which involve sticking stuff to the tiles. flashband is a usefull but temporary fix

He should have asked the council to roof his at the same time while the contractors were up there. They would have given him a good price. A few people who bought their houses on a local estate had theirs done during the council renovations. As above if the proper solution has been used it should be no problem and if it hasn't it will be as much in the next door's interest to fix it as your parents.

Definately shouldn't be flashband. I would want 4lb lead.
