What is the best / make jacket to buy to keep the cold at bay

It's a very subjective topic...
I prefer North Face gear because its a good compromise between quality gear, comfort and fashion.
You can also consider; mountain hardwear and rab stuff...
Efficient warmth is gained by layers...
Thermals, base layers etc
Inner fleece,
Outer fleece,
Windstoppers,
Waterproofs
Etc etc

2nd here for NorthFace nuptse down jacket - very warm but not waterproof but you can get a Gortex waterproof shell that it zips into - very toasty.
or a Irvin sheepskin - almost too hot even with just a T-shirt on!!! (it was 1 or 2 deg sub zero) but not waterproof, bulky, and not cheap either.
Impossible question really.
My ski jacket is warm, zip a fleece into it and it is toasty. Not expensive either (about £50 or so from TKmax)
Much warmth comes from layers, which works well so the outer jacket is useful when it is not quite so cold.
Big puffa jackets are pretty warm, and again do not have to be huge money. Flipside is you could get a quality wool overcoat, or one of those
gamekeepers tweed jackets (and they are very expensive, but if that is your thing....)
I will stick to my ski jacket, works well in dry cold down to -30 or so including windchill, struggled when it hit -45

sky jacket gets my vote - its designed to be worn in sub zero temperature with wind chill. You may find its a little short though - they tend to not
cover your bum too much (well on me anyway). Good windproof walking jacket with zip in fleace + microfleace top + t-shirt & thermal top see's
me toasty every morning when i walk the dog in up to (so far this winter) -7.
(legs have thermals and combats on).
I have just bought a Karrimor jacket, £100 reduced to £50, it's filled with duck down and is the best jacket I have ever purchased! the karrimor boots are great too!
I work outside in all weathers, get left in some pretty grim places, and this jacket performs everytime....

Eskimos recommend empty polar bears and they should know.
Of course catching one and emptying it can be fun.
Bought a Mountain Hardware Down Jacket about 6 yrs ago, price made my eyes water at the time,
it's been worn to death and is still going strong, never been cold in it.
I guess any of the popular makes will do the same job.
As Steve says, the secret to heat is layers, but a good down jacket will keep you toasty in most situations.

North Face McMurdo parka. It's like wearing a duvet.
Anything filled with down is a winner. Don't worry about it being waterproof or not. You tend to wear them below zero when it can't rain.
Otherwise, as Steve said, just layer up. Just ensure you wear synthetic fibres next to your skin. Cotton holds body moisture and makes you feel colder
than you actually are.

you dont need any of that junk. i have been outside on the drive tonight and changed the water pump and cambelt on the tin top in the snow under my popup gazebo. all i had on was an old nike hoodie, jeans and a fleece over the top. didnt feel cold as i was doing something.

nope man of kent all my life. i lived without heating one year at uni, never felt the cold since then.

I'll second cheap ski gear from TKMaxx tbh!
You may laugh but mulitlple thin layers will always be wamer than 1 x Polar Bear or any other Single Thick Layer.
This is beacuse the warm air get trapped between the layers.
Also look at your feet, if you are wearing converse basketball boots your feet will be cold and so will the rest of you. Get a good pair of
tinsulate boots and some lambs wool mix socks and then youwill be warm as toast esp if you have multiple layers up top. Simply pull on 2 x T-Shirt
and you will see what I mean.
