greggors84 - 26/6/04 at 04:33 PM

Its alot better than the first album, alot less crap rapping.

stephen_gusterson - 26/6/04 at 04:36 PM

I havnt heard the first album.

I quite liked the current one, but I think it might get a bit jaded.

Some good lines and real life stuff in there.

an example

In one single moment your whole life can turn 'round
I stand there for a minute starin’ straight into the ground
Lookin’ to the left slightly, then lookin’ back down
World feels like it’s caved in – proper sorry frown
Please let me show you where we could only just be, for us
I can change and I can grow or we could adjust
The wicked thing about us is we always have trust
We can even have an open relationship, if you must
I look at her she stares almost straight back at me
But her eyes glaze over like she’s lookin’ straight through me
Then her eyes must have closed for what seems an eternity
When they open up she’s lookin’ down at her feet

Dry your eyes mate
I know it’s hard to take but her mind has been made up
There’s plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you’ve got to walk away now
It’s over

So then I move my hand up from down by my side
It's shakin’, my life is crashin’ before my eyes
Turn the palm of my hand up to face the skies
Touch the bottom of her chin and let out a sigh
‘Cause I can’t imagine my life without you and me
There’s things I can’t imagine doin’, things I can’t imagine seein’
It weren't supposed to be easy, surely
Please, please, I beg you please
She brings her hands up towards where my hands rested
She wraps her fingers round mine with the softness she’s blessed with
She peels away my fingers, looks at me and then gestures
By pushin’ my hand away to my chest, from hers

Dry your eyes mate
I know it’s hard to take but her mind has been made up
There’s plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you’ve got to walk away now
It’s over

And I’m just standin’ there, I can’t say a word
‘Cause everythin’s just gone
I’ve got nothin’
Absolutely nothin’

Tryin’ to pull her close out of bare desperation
Put my arms around her tryin’ to change what she’s sayin’
Pull my head level with hers so she might engage in
Look into her eyes to make her listen again
I’m not gonna fuckin’, just fuckin’ leave it all now
‘Cause you said it'd be forever and that was your vow
And you’re gonna let our things simply crash and fall down
You’re well out of order now, this is well out of town
She pulls away, my arms are tightly clamped round her waist
Gently pushes me back and she looks at me straight
Turns around so she’s now got her back to my face
Takes one step forward, looks back, and then walks away

Dry your eyes mate
I know it’s hard to take but her mind has been made up
There’s plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you’ve got to walk away now
It’s over

I know in the past I’ve found it hard to say
Tellin’ you things, but not tellin’ straight
But the more I pull on your hand and say
The more you pull away

Dry your eyes mate
I know it’s hard to take but her mind has been made up
There’s plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you’ve got to walk away now.

i dont like most of their stuff (not really my thing) but i like that 'dry yer eyes'. there was one last year too, dont know the name but it was funny, some line about a chinese selling 'sh!t in a tray'!

according to my music folder its called 'weak become heros', actually a bloody good song.

ChrisW - 26/6/04 at 05:15 PM

'Fit but you know it' is good. Not heard the new album yet but I might give it a go.

Don't think he is a southerner - pretty sure he's a Brummy.........

thekafer - 26/6/04 at 05:57 PM

Clever verbage..absolutely groovless....
The first song(the one that starts with a low brass section for the bass line ) is awful... I love "Original Pirate Material". It be havin' a groove on it....

stephen_gusterson - 26/6/04 at 05:59 PM

Chris

- fit is on the latest CD - one of the better tracks too

Stuart

You are prob right, but this board has so many northerners on it, they wouls still think brum is south. However, it seems more like a north of london accent to me - not much brummie in it.....

its not one of the best - but the brass is just a couple of chords cleverly repeated.

I think its 'it was supposed to be so easy'.

Ive not done that DVD thing - except I did drop a blockbuster one of in the quick drop bin at choices once.....

In the first album, he talks a lot about being in Brum - -the Bull ring etc.

Also, the accent is a bit too dodgy to be a
Cockney geezer. You can pick up the odd Brum twang in his speech.

Being lucky enough to work in Brum for just over a year and now being back in the land of the Cockney Sparrah, I do pick up on these things. Sad, I know.....

Overall though, The Streets do grow on you, The guy may be a No.1 Chav but his lyrics are certainly interesting.

Peteff - 27/6/04 at 09:53 AM

Chavs don't get sentimental over tarts . If they don't deliver they are history, get real man. I tried to listen to it on the radio but it's boring and contrived. I conclude that white English kids can't rap.
Why oh, why oh why oh,
Are we so in denial.
Now that's class, outkast.

stephen_gusterson - 27/6/04 at 11:04 AM

actually, I wouldnt really call it rap.

its more like what you said before - a narrative over music

Having originated from north london, I dont think it sounds quite north london, more somewhere between there and milton keynes.

Dunstable rap?

thekafer - 27/6/04 at 12:26 PM

My son just instructed me on the proper way to listen to this (his) CD.

He says it is literally a month out of this dudes(blokes) life. The CD is a chronological narrative. I have'nt had the chance to give another listen. Anyone??

Too old to be listening to his sons' Streets CD's, Fletch

stephen_gusterson - 27/6/04 at 11:54 PM

its obvious when you listen to it that its a story

guy starts by losing 1k quid
then meets a girl
has relationship
strays
gets found out
dumped
unhappy
finds 1000 quid
life goes on

its about everyday life, is funny and tragic too

ps

this cd is in america? I would have thought that you wouldnt understand some of the slang....

greggors84 - 28/6/04 at 12:18 AM

My housemate has the album and he says its brilliant, listened to a few tracks and liked them.
Mike skinner is from Brum, but has picked up the london accent from somewhere. Maybe he passed through Dunstable on the way down (poor bastard!)

thekafer - 28/6/04 at 12:29 AM

OY! OY!

My son has a pretty eclectic CD collection.South American,African,European...As for the slang..If one can understand Ebonics.......there aint be no lip I aint be pickin strait trip beeaaahtch...

P.O. Fletch,

stephen_gusterson - 28/6/04 at 08:58 AM

My experience of americans are that they dont have the adaptability of language as we do.

Things like

car park = parking lot

and the best was when I asked for a return ticket at a railway station in chicago.

I was sold a book of 10 tickets as the guy didnt understand. Is a 'return ticket' so much less intelligable than a 'round trip' ticket. I recon a UK ticket seller would understand........

'your fit and you know it' has nothing to do with working out...... but I suspect a lot of americans would think that song is about an athletic girl, rather than an attractive one.....

i was stood behind an american in the shop the other day, made me feel like i was on holiday! great drawl, he said 'how ya doin'!? twenny marlbrough lites please!"

but obviously with a funny american accent, which i cant write, but you get my drift... chicago maybe?

thekafer - 28/6/04 at 10:10 PM

We both park in a "driveway" and drive on a "parkway"....

Yes, I could figure out that "fit" in the context of the song meant "smokin"....

stephen_gusterson - 28/6/04 at 10:27 PM

parkway isnt a common name for roads here...... its used a bit but not often

we would say road or highway
