Looking to get a new bike possibly hybrid.

Budget is retail price of £500.

All things considered, what are your recommendations ?

I bought my first MTB since i was 15 (15 year+ ago), it was a Cube hardtail. £800 but it was one of the higher end models in the cheap range. Would look at them if you can as they seem very well kitted compared to its rivals.

Think mine was a cabe ltd comp 2008 model

I've a Claude Butler Cape Wrath...fits right into that price range...

Usage? Then I'll put my cycle coach hat on.

Road bike / Mountain bike / Commuter (you mentioned this already ) I have a mate who had road bikes but as the roads are so cr@p moved to a commuter (an expensive Giant) and hates it. The condition of the roads would stop me from using a road bike (and the lycra). I've had both soft tail and hard tail mountain bikes for years now and my current hack is a nice Kona hard tail. 2.5" off road tyres and I use it for everything. If I was using it to commute again I would put some commuter tyres on it.

£500 wouldn't necessarily go very far but if you look on the bay of e you would get something nice for that money. Maybe spend 50 quid less (or find 50 quid more) and get one off the bay and chuck it straight into a good bike shop for a decent service.

Hi If you want a good new hybrid for £500 look no further than a Chris Boardman from halfords, if your work do cycle to work schemes even better.

I bought A Giant Trance X4 (full sus) in March last year - list price was a grand, but with C2W, I'll pay £480 for it

Rules have changed, but if you can get a bike in a sale (and there's lots at the moment), and do the C2W, you should get a good bike. A friend bought a bike - list was £2400, on sale at £1200. done on C2W, he'll pay about £700.

Thanks for the input so far.

Since taking up the bike a couple of years ago, I have been using a borrowed Diamondback Lakeside.
I do go on the road, but I also use the extensive network of paths and trails around here as well.

If I do commuting, it'll be the few miles to the station, the remaining 18 or so are way too dangerous.

It's through the C2W scheme, hence why I'm interested.

Really, I want something I can call my own, that's all.

I'm probably pointing to another hybrid I suspect.

Thoughts ?
