Problem with Daily Driver

My Mondeo has sprung a water leak. It's a 2 litre Zetec engine, but I'm buggered if I can work out where its coming from.

Clear clean hot water is dripping from behind the crankshaft pulley. When I run the engine water gets sprayed from the cam belt. I can't see or feel any leaks from the pipework, and it seems to me that its unlkely to be coming from the crankshaft seal, so it must be coming from above the pulley. No sign of a leak there either, although there is a plastic cover on the front of the engine behind the cam belt, so I suppose it could be coming from behind there.

Apart from losing water the car runs fine.

Would anyone out there have any idea of the likely source, I'm stumped.

Probably from the water pump, i would assume its up there somewhere driven by the cambelt..............

Got a 2.0L zetec in my kit, the water pump is obviously attached in the area you say, could be the gasket is leaking or maybe it could be the seal on the water pump shaft itself. Or does the water pump have a small hole somewhere near the pulley end that is normally sealed but is now leaking (if you've ever owned a mini you will know what I mean).

I think the short version is that the water pump will have to come off, and at £36 a replacement would be sensible (use a little silicone on the gasket when refitting), and since the cam belt has also got to come off may as well replace thank as well.

or am I talking %^&* (sure Conrod will be along in a minute to advise)

Thanks Dave, didn't think of that.

Does anybody know where the water pump is on a Zetec? All I can see is a plastic cover.

And thanks Givemethebighammer you posted as I typed.

sounds like the water pump, but there is a core plug there as well.
its not an easy job as the timing belt will have to come off and you need a tool to lock the cams and space is limited
