Hello!

I've got some well and truly rusted in screws on the rear of my Mk2 Golf. It's the plinth that houses the lock and number plate lights.

I've tried to undo them with an assortment of screwdrivers but no joy, they're just rounding off. Access is limited too so drilling out isn't really a good option.

Has anyone a recommendation for a cheap impact screwdriver?

I have cheapish Dewalt one (£50 without battery) and for work on our house it's probably the best tool I own. I will undo or screw in pretty much anything.

Possibly not what you were thinking?

They only really work well on solid items, such as screws in casting, brake drum/disc holding screws etc.

If you are trying release screws as described I think you will at best destroy the plastic lens covers, at worst deform the panel holding the screw.

It may be better to budget for new lens and hold a nut over the damaged screw head and shoot a little weld inside, the heat will free the screw off and the nut head give you some purchase.

Alternative, get a right angle drill head on the job.

Thanks Mark, that makes a lot of sense. It's a Golf "feature" I think, loads of muck and spray thrown onto the rear and corrodes these fittings faster than most!

I'll try some other options first and see where I get!
