Which angle grinder?
cliftyhanger - 16/6/12 at 04:11 PM

After using a mates bosch angry grinder today I have seen thye error of my ways and feel I ought to uy a quality bit of kit.
However, which is the best one, must be 4 1/2" and decent. There seem to be the bosch gws 660/850 etc and also 8-115 and so on, but which is the better?? Or another brand/model. Ideally about £50 give or take.
Cheers
Clive

Bosch, Metabo or Makita are good makes. Some people will swear by De Walt or whatever they use and it's one of those cases where you pays your money and takes your chance. I recently bought a Metabo WE14-125 Quick from ebay (outside your budget) and it's a brute. It has variable speed and a quick nut for disc changes plus you can't switch it on accidentally as it has a safety feature to stop it working if switched on at the socket with the trigger engaged and a clutch for if the disc jams. I splashed out as I burnt out 3 of my cheap ones in 2 weeks although they had seen lots of work.
Metabo have a 3 year warranty if you register you purchase but I've not had to use it.

I got a green bosch one from Makro a couple of years ago and its been very good and was only about £29 I think but we have the blue ones at work and they get thoroughly abused 6 days a week and last about 6 - 8 years!

Bosch are very good, Gws 660/850 is the watts, the higher number the more power the motor has, 8 115 means its 800 watts and 115mm which relates to 4.5". You can't expect to go to b&q and buy a £35.00 Bosch and it be the best grinder ever when it's only a 550 watt, you need to get a industrial 850 watt Bosch if you want a proper grinder that's gonna last.

i have gone through about 4-5 angle grinders bosch, dewalt, power devil, b&d. none of them lasted. i then thought what the hell and splashed out £50 on a 115mm makita, never looked back its four years old now has built two cars, fixed many others and also did all the chopping out of the walls when rewiring mine and my brothers house. it doesn't matter what stupid things i do to it i just cant kill it, and it doesnt matter how hard you use you will never manage to stall it.

The only thing I'd say is- make sure as much as it as possible is metal. I had an angry grinder die when the bearing carrier that sits under the disc (made from best engineering plastic (IE plastic)) melted due to some serious grinding. The disc got some serious wobble as the bearing moved in the molten plastic and vibrated itself out of my hand. Luckily I was quick with the off switch and managed to drop it without it taking a chunk out of me. So now I only use grinders with metal bearing carriers.
