Too poor to own one. What does it say?

Benzine - 8/9/04 at 11:09 PM

Standing on the shoulders of giants

Never liked heights. Anyone else that feels the same can sent there £2 coins to me. Address via U2U.

robinbastd - 8/9/04 at 11:26 PM

Ah,but have you seen the Trevithick £2 coin? On it's edge it has some ... some... err, well it looks like how a child would draw a seagull,or lots of them flying next to each other and some dashes.
Couldn't the Royal Mint come up with a fatuous saying or wouldn't "worth bugger all" and "get ready for the euro"fit?
Answers on a postcard,please.

Again, anyone with Ornithophobia, address via U2U.

Didn't they do the theme tune for Malcolm in the middle, "you're not the boss of me now"

That's part of a Isaac Newton quote, isn't it?

simonH - 9/9/04 at 05:02 AM

yes a paraphrasing of one of newtons comments. he was saying that yes he is great but without all the scientists and scolas before him he would be nothing . "standing on the sholders of giants" is litteraly that he is elevated by the popople before him

Good thing you pointed that out- I'd have been really confused about it otherwise!

If you do a search on the phrase, it is attributed to Newton. I was just being a bit terse with the info to stimulate some discussion. Some sites say its actually a mis quote.

Still, I dont see how it applies in the context of a coin.

Is it possible to separate the two parts of a £2 coin? Anyone with a hydraulic press want to have a go?

Chris

I've done it with a vice, 5p coin to press on the centre and a couple more coins to support the edges. I put it back in the wrong way, bet nobody's ever noticed

its the tower of london for you then.

defacing a coin of the relm is still a serious offence

Oh yes, " Ouch, f"&king apple tree, it's coming down first chance I get" Did he discover gravity or did he just prove it was there and how did we cope not knowing what was holding us down? Do fat people worry more about gravity than they ought to or will they have an advantage if gravity eventually runs out? It can't last forever.

It was an accident.

Sounds like an expensive way to make washers to me. Another good one is filing the corners off 50p to make 10p coins Bet you'd not thought of that one.

The reverse of the 1984 pound shows a Scottish thistle.
The edge is inscribed with the motto of the Order of the Thistle.
This inscription in Latin reads:-
NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT
Which may be translated as:
"No-one provokes me with impunity, jimmy!!!!" <HEAD BUTT>
