6 points or a 56 day ban????
Avoneer - 19/9/04 at 08:19 PM

6 points or a 56 day ban depending on the Magistrates' on the day.
That's what you get for doing 59 on a dual carriageway on a Sunday morning when there is no traffic and the speed limit is 30mph!
Goes with the car I guess!
Pat.....

Whoops... what you gonna do then?

mangogrooveworkshop - 19/9/04 at 08:26 PM

Six thats expensive 56 thats murder. ouch

Avoneer - 19/9/04 at 08:38 PM

There are ways out of this and ways to reduce it to 3 points, but working at a Magistrates' Court myself, I have no choice but to own up and write a bloody grovelling letter and beg for the 6 points.....
Don't fancy the insurance next year if I get the ban!!!!!
Pat....

Surrey Dave - 19/9/04 at 08:41 PM

It's really irritating when the law is applied in such a rigid non sensical way!

While you where being dealt with there where berks all over the country doing 90 mph down the motorway 3 feet from the guy in fronts bumper.

They're a bit more difficult to catch though!

Hellfire - 19/9/04 at 08:51 PM

Pat are you the one who posted 'scumof the earth' on the poll then?

Bad luck with the speeding tax

Avoneer - 19/9/04 at 08:53 PM

Yeah, I hear you loud and clear Dave and get that thrown at me every day at work. What can you do eh!
You pay your money.....
Pat...

Avoneer - 19/9/04 at 08:55 PM

What poll was the hellfire???
I generally try and help people beleive it or not!
Unless they speak to me like a tw*t.....

Hope the little run in my under engineered wishbone Tiger excuse for a car Avon thing gave you some motivation to finish the bloody thing!
Going to sell mine March-ish time and go for a Fisher Fury with a V4 pan European number....
Then again, depends if I get another "intended prosecution" letter!!!!!!!
Pat....

Peteff - 19/9/04 at 10:29 PM

Speed limits the same all week, ignorance is no alibi in the eyes of the law. There's one like that in Chesterfield. It doesn't go with the car, Escort vans get done as well, ask my carpet fitter.

Avoneer - 19/9/04 at 11:09 PM

Yeah, that has shut me up.
I hold my hands up and yes, I was speeding and "should have known better".
What more can I say?

Can't you try for 'Driver Education'. Spend a day at a course learning 'safety'.

Costs about £150 but no points.

I'm sure you're aware anyway.

David Jenkins - 20/9/04 at 07:49 AM

I guess that a Locost is always going to be a police magnet, just like a big flash Porsche. And if the driver goes down the High Street wearing a crash helmet...

I got nailed twice on my DT125 when I had passed my bike test aged 21, both within about a month of each other. Once for doing 45 in a 30 mph limit and once (worse) for doing 57 in a 30mph limit. the 45 resulted in 3 points and 45 quid, the 57 resulted in 6 points and 60 quid. The fines weren't really an issue as I was earning a good wage by then but the points hurt like hell for the 3 years I had them and the five years afterwards that insurance companies ask you whether you 'have had any claims or convictions in the last five years'. I swore when it happened but I now stick to the speed limit in built up areas. I am no angel, I speed on 60mph limit roads and on motorways but the copper who pulled me for doing 57 in a 30 gave me the "What if a little kid or an old lady walked out" speech and it stuck in me brain. Just remember that we all make mistakes, try to learn from it mate. Book yerself on a track day, then you can speed all you want

ned - 20/9/04 at 09:19 AM

i don't agree with speed limits, i ignore them practically all the time, same for traffic lights sometimes. if you can see there's no traffic, the road is clear or its late night/early morning what's the harm in going a bit quicker. in my opinion when driving very quickly, as long as the only person in danger is yourself (note, not passengers) then if the road is empty drive at whatever speed you like. i haven't been caught, but have had a few clsoe shaves, catching up police cars @speed seems to be the recent thing for brown trousers. anyway, i know it's against hte law, but like i said they haven't caought me, i haven't hurt anyone and enjoy the drive, i also know the roads very well that i do drive fast on. another thing, some 30mph speed limits start so far away from any built up areas or houses it is ridiculous, I've hit 100mph in a 30mph in a diesel before now and slowed down to under 40 before reaching any house, corner or anything.
sorry, got myself started there...

Ned.

Peteff - 20/9/04 at 10:03 AM

If I'm ever in Guildford early morning,(highly unlikely) always stop at the green light in case Ned's coming the other way. When you get caught don't expect sympathy after that admission Ned, 100 in a 30 is going to be a field day for police, you'll probably make the papers.

stephen_gusterson - 20/9/04 at 10:21 AM

Ned

I think thats the most stupid post of all time - or was it a joke......

------------------
i don't agree with speed limits, i ignore them practically all the time, same for traffic lights sometimes.
---------------------

I could quote nearly every line - its got moron written all over it!

(you have made it up, surely)

We all have to hold up our hands sometimes to speeding - like I did to the cop that caught me doing 48 into the start of a 30 4 years ago.

There is also some small argument about 'driving as conditions allow'.

But who is to define that? a driver with an inflated ego may feel they are safe doing 70 in the high street on a saturday night, until someone steps out.

Those with your attitude would be the first to want killers with cars banned - but then you advocate a 'make it up as i go along as long as i feel its safe' argument.

Im against speed cams, in most situations anyway, but reading what you just said I think we need a whole lot more.

Ned

I really cant believe how you could put that S H I T in print!

You need locking up

john_p_b - 20/9/04 at 10:22 AM

i've so far been very lucky when it comes to leicestershire constabulary, been pulled 3 times for doing stupid things and only had a warning and a producer for each of em! only 1 of em was really a matter of safety though, 1am on a monday morning coming home after a argument with the girlfriend and dropping her off at home, nice wide fast roundabout just a couple of streets away from here and i decided i wasn't slowing down as it was empty road so hitting it at about 55 (in a 40 ) came off it pretty sideways only to notice officer dibble coming the other way. opps!

the other 2 were pretty pathetic really, had a producer for my exhaust being too loud!!!! it was a totally road legal system which the jobsworth decided can't have been legal as 'the pipe lools larger than average and exhausts shouldn't be that shiny under a car' !! he could prove nothing funnily enough.

then there was the matter of the music slightly too loud in a residetial area at 6am on my way to work. bit touch and go that one really cos if they had soundmeters then i guess they could have charged me with something but they didn't so couldn't

was glad to sell that car in the end it just attracted em!!

sad thing is i'm starting all over again now

just thought i'd share that with you all as i'm bored

At the very least Ned thats a rather harsh way to say thankyou to your parents for bringing you into this world. I am (fairly) confident they wouldn't want to see their son being cut from the mangled wreckage of his car because in his considerd opinion speed limits were unnecessary and he could handle driving faster?

sarcasm is a wonderful thing. i do enjoy a good natter first thing on a monday morning

blueshift - 20/9/04 at 07:07 PM

I suppose that sadly, it's people with ned's kind of attitude that result in us all getting held rigidly to all speed limits by cameras everywhere.

stephen_gusterson - 20/9/04 at 07:52 PM

i wouldnt have posed that on a public forum - just imagine if neddy has an accident now.

Ned - ever thought of taking up Kamakazee Bullfighting, maybe wearing red and being tied to a post in the middle of an arena?

I think it generated the response you so obviously aimed for...

ned - 21/9/04 at 08:55 AM

thanks hellfire et al! note i've not edited or deleted the post, so i can't be accused of incriminating myself or anything else

David Jenkins - 21/9/04 at 10:59 AM

Ok - perhaps Ned's usual tact and diplomacy failed this time round - but I'm probably just as guilty of periodic speeding on occasions. There are some roads between home and my local station that are signed as 30mph, even though they are open country roads without houses, schools, whatever. NOBODY does 30mph unless there's a police car around, so the whole thing's a bad joke.
OTH, if I'm in town or a built-up area I'll often do less than the speed limit - I drive according to conditions, but occasionally exceed the speed limits when suitable.

Speed limits are a joke in Suffolk - on the same road there's a bridge with half a dozen signs on each side, and a 20mph speed limit. This is because there has been ONE crash on the bridge and, looking at the damage, he must have been doing a lot more than 30mph when it happened. In the same vein, Suffolk County Council have reduced the max speed limit on the entire A140 in the county, much to the annoyance of Norfolk who own the other half.

However, in spite of all this ranting, I would drive SLOWER in my Locost due to it's uniqueness and high visibility - it's a police magnet and bound to attract attention.

rgds,

David

marktigere1 - 21/9/04 at 02:08 PM

Followed my brother once around the roads of North Yorkshire.

He drove like a tw@t.

When I questioned his choice of speed he replied "Its okay, I know the roads!"

This in my view is bullsh1t!! Unless you have xray vision, you have absolutely know idea of whats round the next bend or indeed what other road users are going to do. I live in Norfolk where there are too many blind bends and farm machinery for my liking.

BTW, Mrs Tigere1 was a secretary for the traffic division of Norfolk police. She would type up the fatals and believe me, she used to come home very upset with some of the incidents. Not always caused by speed either.

Just my 2p.

Cheers

Mark

stephen_gusterson - 21/9/04 at 03:34 PM

I used to work with a secretary who was injured in an accident - took months to get right again.

Her daughter was driving, she was in front seat. Duaghter pulled out onto a road (country road) with no traffic around, then a car came round a corner at ballistic speed and t-boned the car.

not that im saying I never speed....... its just that really excessive speed is outright dangerous, and to think individuals know best is assuming all individuals know their limits. most dont.

blueshift - 21/9/04 at 04:02 PM

Especially young men who think they know how to drive, like most of us. I'm starting to appreciate that I'm not nearly as good a driver as I thought I was

JoelP - 21/9/04 at 10:11 PM

here here blueshift, a few near misses can really open your eyes. i do as david says nowadays, often below the speed limit if i feel the circumstances require it (bad rain, crowds on pavement etc)

stephen_gusterson - 22/9/04 at 09:03 AM

when I was 19 I hit a tree in a mini. Over 40mph, car was totalled. Doors fell off (1965 minis did that kinda thing) and I was thrown out.

lost my job, couldnt walk without sticks (fractured pelvis) for a couple months.

Once you know how much an accident friggin hurts, thats focusses the mind wonderfully too!

James - 22/9/04 at 11:25 AM

Or costs!

I've had one accident- about a year after I started regularly driving. Caused by tiredness becuase I'd been up really late the night before repairing my car after someone hit it and buggered off.
I'm in a traffic jam, merrily considering the world outside me when the cars in front started moving off. I started to follow but then slipped back into daydreaming again- so didn't see the ones in front had stopped again until too late. Braked hard but still went up the arse of the person in front of me and pushed her into the car in front of her. Was probably only doing 5-10mph at point of impact but it was enough as I guess she didn't have her handbrake on.

Took ages to sort out and was extremely stressful. The driver in the middle sued for 3-4K for whiplash so the total cost was about 7K. My insurance had been £750 and when it came for renewal jumped to £1800 with same company. I promptly left them but could get anything cheaper than £1100.

Ever since I've been a damn site more careful and my stopping distances have increased massively!

James
