I've got a Cavalier and filling up is a nightmare. The back pressure causes the pump to cut off even with the pumps handle only slightly depressed. Same thing happened with a Corsa I had. Anyone got any suggestions?
I had the same thing with my van but only at certain stations, park further from the pump and don't let the pipe sag below the level of the filler neck. Worked for me anyway.

I was forced to do that yesterday as I had to park on the other side of the pump, but it's still up to it's old tricks.
Is it common place to have a breather from the tank to allow the preassure to be reduce?

i got that on my vectra all the time, and on all cars to a lesser extent. I tend to pull the nozzle out a bit and maybe turn it upside down.
Yeah, I only put the first 1.5" of the nozzle in to reduce the preasure and I've found that having the trigger at about 10 - 11 o'clock
helps.
When I was filling up last week the pump cut off as i'd been there too long (3 min). I only managed to get £36 in during that time. 
i was at a pump in scotland the other week, it fed so slow (not cutting off, just slow like that chinese place in herbie goes to monte carlo!) that i
got bored at £9 and gave up!
Well, if you ask me it's a conspiracy devised by General Motors to encourage the public to buy newer cars. Check the patent office and next to
shrink wrap in the categorised section I'm willing to bet there'll be something called Age Wrap. They'll most likely use it to connect
the filler cap to the tank and with age the diameter will decrease making it near impossible to filler 'er up without loosing your rag.
If it's not a General Motors conspiracy it's the fault of the Green Party.

i know what you mean. it pissed me right off for the first few weeks of driving my 92 cav. since then, i've sort of found an optimum position.
its hard to describe and sort of instinctive but put the nozzle in up to the hilt so to speak, then pull it back about 2". it usually works but i
think its a design flaw in the filler neck that only came in with mk3s. mk2 cavs and novas have always been fine so i don't know really. you just
have to sort of live with it
