alternator problem!!
marcyboy - 22/10/04 at 04:02 PM

ive got a problem with my diesel mpv. at low idle the warning beeps and all the warning lights go ape,
the headlights are not affected by the drop or increase in idle, which pointed me in the direction of the battery...i was wrong!!,
i thought it was just cream crackered not holding full charge, is there anybody here who might know or has previously had the same trouble.
can brushes gradually wear out or will they just stop altogether ?.
next step is to inspect belts for slippage before trying to get new brushes for the alternator. or worse a new alternator,
any help much appreciated

I always know when my alternator belt is slipping on my diesel vectra... the rev counter stops working.... Not sure if all diesels use the alternator speed for revs tho.

You can get all sorts of funny problems when the alternator starts to go.

Ben, your exscuse to buy a more expensive car!

Yep, considering the vectra (p-reg) only cost me £200 + £150 for the engine.

Need a bigger car for work.

Nowt really wrong with the vectra, handles well enough for me to slide it round corners, large boot too.

the words like cornering and handling don't apply to vectras do they

just got rid of my vectra - the huge pile of poo - 3 yrs old and the diff self destructed.

vauxhall wanted over 2 grand to put it right. got a box out of a scrapper for £250 but cos they are crap it takes a superhuman (and a mate) and a proper ramp to change the gearbox. so I had to pay someone another £200 to fit it.

the climate control went wrong every 2 months for my entire period of ownership (8 months) on average £120 a go.

It cost me over £100 for a cambelt kit - you can't just fit a belt - they only design the plastic pulleys to last for 50k miles it seems.

the bulbs in the dash kept blowing

the seats creaked all the time

it handled like a plate of jelly on lard

the bits of trim on the roof fell off

It rattled and the dash creaked and ticked as the heater warmed the car in the morning

One of the thermostatic fan switches went west an it kept overheating - that one took a bit of sorting!!!!

I hated that car

good bits errrrrrrrrm the headlights - yes they worked ok errrrrrm thats about it

I will never buy a vauxhall again

rant... rant ...rant

cost me a fortune

rant ... rant.....rant

traded it in for a Honda - boring but at least I feel it is going to get me where I am going

Buy a V6 mondeo, they aren't bad, my dad had two.

Changed engine and box over myself, was easy ! Drop subframe, bolt new engine on, and lift it up

The only thing i agree with is the creaking dash, but it's not often.

Best car I've ever had for £350
