howdy folks.

righty plans are all going ahead for having a new garage built at my folks place but it's leaving me with one major dilema, how to store the cars next winter while it's all being done as its basicly gonna take us 18 - 24 months to get the job finished ( proper size garage for about 6-7 cars )

we were looking at getting a couple of those metal flat pack type garages, one for me dads car, one for my kit car but now i gone and bought this cossie there is another ball on the pitch

basicly to get to the point whats ppls opinions on what to go for. i'm thinking flat pack metal is gonna be easy to build BUT i have worries about it getting condensation in it? wood will be a little more time consuming but i'm thinking the wood will help keep the condensation down?

any ideas folks?

Who's building it and what out of, matchsticks? . You could look out for a couple of sectional garages. You can sometimes pick them up for the trouble of dismantling them. We got one for my bro-in-law and used the sections to make a fence when he had finished with it.

it's gonna take a bit of time simply due to the size of it plus we are doing as much of it ourselfs as we can so it's fitting it in bewteen everything else i didn't think it'd take that long but me dad rekons it will and who am i to argue with him?!

there are usually some sectional one's on EBAY as Pete says for little money. I saw a massive concrete section one a while ago - free to collector! IMHO that's probably the type to go for too!

A tame brickie quoted me a weekend and £280 quid labour to build a single garage in 4" concrete block.
Figure another £300 for blocks, £235 for a slab poured into your fomwork by minibatch. Then timber for the roof. and a door. Definitely do-able for a around £1200.
It would cost you that for a metal job withoutthe base.
It's just a matter of factoring these numbers up by the multiples of the size.
Brickies around here take £7 a metre to lay 4" blocks ( that's cash in hand of course ) and there's 10 blocks to a metre.

One of those situations where it's worth paying a man to do the job and it's done before you know it - rather than fannying about and taking forever doing it yourself.

YMMV of course IMHO and all those other annoying internet based disclaimers.

I presume he means to lay 1 square metre of concrete blocks - that's a fair size section for £7.

zilspeed, i'm totally seeing what ya saying and i've tried getting that across to me dad but he's not seeing the point at all and basicly it's either a case for the next winter or two to get something up the garden to keep the cars outta the eliments of i'm gonna be buying some big plastic covers!

oh and rough sizes for the garage are 56ft x 28ft x 12ft 2 double doors, pitched tiled roof etc ( i think he got a bit carried away )

I built mine out of 4" blocks with recycled brick front so it's nice to look at from the house . It's 12' wide and 21' long and I mixed and laid the floor myself as it's impossible to get a lorry in. Including wiring and corrugated roof sheets it cost under £1000 and took me 3 months. I had nothing else to do so I just did one mix a day and laid as many blocks as it took to use it up. They are heavy in concrete but it's 6 times quicker than brick.

My garage is 15 meter x 5 meter and it took me 18 working days to do the brick work,concrete blocks as >Peteff said much faster, both in build time and bracking your back
