Cool sand Racer pictures
colibriman - 10/2/05 at 10:42 AM

I have had 2 cracking pictures from a potential customer (in Africa) of his off road single seat buggy having fun in desert sand dunes and thought I would share them.....

Sand-dune buggy

Anybody else seen these pictures before?

The guy has asked about Aprilia and R1 power.....I tend to think they would be a OTT Wheelie monster with that kind of power...anybody else think they would be overpowered ?

I don't know about over powered mate, is there such a thing?

Cool pics and yes, overpowered is probably the phrase I'd use!!!

'overpowered - is there such a thing?'

I would say Naaaaaaa.....

just maybe think it would be overkill to put a 1000cc engine in it......600cc would be ample - apparently they are mostly going to be used on sand and gravel surfaces so I think all the power would be lost in spinning - opinions?

and on harder surfaces I tend to think they would wanna flip.....

chunkielad - 10/2/05 at 11:32 AM

Yeah I defo agree - 600 ZZR, CBR, ZX6R?

These would be plenty - they sould also put car engines in though - bit heavier but I think probably more robust.

What about off road bikes, there's a ton of 500 and 750s - 750 should be OK.

The fella particularly wants fuel injected engines though because there is a lot of variation in height from sea level. hence constant carb tweaking.......

Variation on height? surely thats when they rip off the top of the sand dune at full tilt!

Wouldnt want to be out tweaking a carb mid launch!

Rorty is the one to comment on these sorts of buggies i reckon.

Wonder what sort of rear diff set up they use - could be of interest to the middy builders

The buggy in the pictures looks very much like a Pirahna by an Aussie company called the edge:

Colin
Macspeedy and I have the plans for these buggies and 600cc is the power that they recommend. Anything more is stupid as you just break drive shafts/ujs. Is that lad in Namibia or Kalahari.
Nice pictures......
I may be going to SA soon

Hi folks....
Mango - He is is Namibia....Why you so precise?

my reason for posting is to try work out if it's legit or a 'give me your account details and I'll give you 3 million' kind of enquiry

colibriman - 10/2/05 at 12:21 PM

Mark - it does look very like the 'Piranha'

very wary just now but don't want to dismiss it yet in case it's a legit enquiry....not sure yet as to where he got onto my site from...

Looks good fun to me

I've just ordered the book from Ron 'How to build a buggy' - my brother is well up for doing one - he wants it road legal though!!

I'll wait and laugh erm... see what he does.
