My wife's copy of the remote unlocking device on the key of our 2003 Passat stopped working. The key can still be used non-remotely, and my key works fine remotely. Any idea what could be wrong, and whether it is something I can fix myself? I don't fancy paying a couple of 100$ to the dealer if I can help it.

dead battery? take it to the dealer and ask as some fobs die if the battery is not replaced in a certain way (inbuilt alarms/immobilisers and what not)

It may be a dead battery or maybe your wife's key needs re-registering with the system. It has been known for some to loose the combination.

I'd return to dealer to be sure.

I work in the parts department of a VW dealer...

Key fobs are a pain in the arse, if it's not the battery that's dead the connectors inside that touch the battery have crapped out somehow.

doesnt have akey at all. just a bit of plastic crap that goes in a slot.

id rather have a good old fashioned ket any day.

Hippy will understand, its the first part of any passat part number - they use the first relevant part of the chassis number as the prefix to any part number, but increase the '0' bit as parts are superceded. the problem is usually the battery, but sometimes the key needs to be 'reaquainted' with the computer to make it work.

3Bx xxx xxx is Passat...

3B0 xxx xxx is saloon

3B9 xxx xxx is the estate

Current shape Passat that is.

Old shape was 3Ax etc..

Golf is 1J0 and 1J6, Bora 1J9 I think. Still learning.

I know enough now to be borderline sad bastard, but I'm not quite there

Of course a lot of Estate parts will be 3B0 numbers... only estate specific parts are 3B9...

Didn't really need to add that bit... I'll shut up now

Add to that the fact that some Passat parts have the 8E0 and 4B0 numbers of the Audi A6 and A4 thanks to the family genepool and the water starts to become murky...

The 3B5 are the ones that the cocked up on!

I reckon a clutch would cost a fortune if it needed doing. Then there's all those spidery alloy compnents in the rear suspension.

yes and no.....

my wifes renault megane has a hole at one corner to attatch the card to a key ring. its not locked into the key slot - you can take the card out when driving if you wish.


the laguna has a hole, but its in the centre of the edge thats inserted into the slot, and used to lock the card in so it cant be taken out when driving.


nice uniformity of design!

so, if you use the hole for the keyring, you cant put it into the slot.

such is the 'neatness' of the system, it took me 3 weeks to get the second key for my car as the dealer gave me one from another car. there are no numbers or ID marks on the key, apart from 'laguna'.

so, its not easy to attatch the card to a ring or a tag - i think they must mix them up regularly at the dealers!

all in all, i think its technology gone a little bit OTT.
