Hillclimb category

At university I am working for the Formula Student team, working on the development of last year's car to do something a bit different. We are interested in possibly entering the car into some Hillclimb events, so I'm trawling through the regulations to see what we would need to do to make the car legal.

However, I'm having a bit of trouble deciding which category our car comes under, is there anyone who can point me in the right direction?

The car is a single seater "formula" style car, but I can't tell whether it would be classed as Hill Climb Super Sports car, Sports Libre car or a Racing car.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

I would expect it to be a racing car, but I'm not sure. Try the forum in my signature, that lot are clever.

I went to a hillclimb at prescott a few months ago and there were three Formula Student cars there. They weren't racing, but just having a run. None of them made it to the top, and one of them ended up int pieces.

You probably wont be able to enter the formula student car in hillclimbs unless your feet are behind the front axle line of the car. (unusual in fs cars!)

Thanks Adam, I was just signing up to your forum as you replied!

I'd heard that some Formula Student cars had gone along last year, there's a bit about it on the Loughborough website ( HERE if anyone's interested). Looks like reliability could be a bit of an issue - I didn't realise hill climbing was that stressful on the cars!

Yeah that's one of the things we've picked up - would mean modifying the chassis to move the axle forwards, at the moment I think the axle is about level with the driver's knees!

I don't think thats right, ask Lotusmark2 (BigMark on hillclimb forum) if the your feet are in front of the axle line in a terrapin. I think they are. I'm not entirely sure though.

Hmm that's interesting - would certainly make it easier to enter our car. The lecturer leading the FS team told me about that rule but I must admit i haven't found anything in the regs that say that yet.

I prefer to call it "research"

WRT the feet/axles rules, I've just found it in the regs book - so we would have to move our front axle

Any new car has to have the legs behind the front axle - the terrapin might not apply to that .

My degree is from the west of england Uni - but i went to swansea Institute.

i think you would be lumped in with the 600cc OMS and Jedi - but if you enter sports libre - its more sports car based - so really youll be racing car , ie against the top flight .

Bath is ok, getting a bit bored of the place now to be honest, not really much to do!

Still, at least they built a Wetherspoons over the summer, keeps us students happy

Sounds to me like it would be classed as a racing car. The regs for Harewood Hillclimb are available online if that is any help - here
