I wonder where the fouth piston ended up???? Still in orbit?

I assume it was a race engine? What type / car / race??

ned - 7/3/05 at 12:25 PM

4th piston, hmm

not here:

Hellfire - 7/3/05 at 12:39 PM

OMG

If that's what they mean by a blow job then I'm sorry, but I don't want one!

just found this:

quote:

What Happened......Machine shop didnt bore enough for the forged pistons, so when the pistons heated up they all seized to the walls simultaneously. this happened at dragway 42 in ohio. ran a 13.7......but up until it blew he was about half car behind an evo VIII that pulled a 12.8. It was a well built setup with a 75 hp direct port....

this was a freak accident that should have been avoided. machine shop did not check clearances on the piston walls before returning the block back. They did not cover the damage or offer any type of reimbursement. 55mm tb, ross forged pistons on stock rods and a bunch of other bolt ons. great way to lose 3 grand in a few minutes

we did a 1500 mile break in on the block before we ran the giggle juice. Everything was kosher, even ran the juice a lot (think 4 or so bottles.) but.... all those runs were on a 1/8 mile track, hardly giving the pistons enough time to heat and expand.

It was one hell of a fireball.........and an oilly mess on the track. **** happens.......

Ouch

donut - 7/3/05 at 02:31 PM

I thought that's what happened to your PUG engine after you were trying to keep up with my MX5 on Sunday

ned - 7/3/05 at 02:44 PM

no, that was the first time i found the limiter while spinning in 1st @ 6500rpm

omega 24 v6 - 7/3/05 at 10:12 PM

As a newbie i take it from the comments that this is not repairable

I haven't been to dragway 42 in 10 years. It was built in to 1960s as a 4 lane NASCAR sanctioned drag strip. Last time I was there the terack surface was pretty bad.

Ned, any link to more info on this?

To me it doesn't look like a seizure. There are no score marks on pistons!

I wonder if it has water injection by any chance?
Looks remarkably like an hydraulic'd engine to me!
Pure speculation, but either way expensive!

Bet it was a loud bang...
