Does anyone know of a good software firewall that is XP compatible and preferably free?
TIA
New Zone Alarm with antivirus does it for me...
cant go wrong with zone alarm.
Use a router if you want full protection.
Cheers,
Bob
Just switched to Kerio Personal firewall because of a lot of problems with zonealarm and sp2. However it was only me who had the problems, I have not
seen similair on any other machine and usually reccomend zonealarm.
Kerio seems pretty good though and is also free.
Sorry my wireless router does it for me but I here zone alarm is good.
Kerio PF but important get release version 2.1.x release not the 4.x here are a couple of URLs
http://www.bluechillies.com/details/13071.html
http://pricelessware.org/thelist/sec.htm
Version 4.x is more system resource hungry and has some xtra but superfluous such as pop up blocking features which become disabled after 30 days.
Version 2.1.4 or 2.1.5 are pretty well bullet proof.
Just a point about depending a routers firewall and NATS it is fine BUT I am super cautious and on a home Windows network I would also to run a
software firewall on any PC that had important data on it.
Re Zone Alarm it is a very solid firewall but tends to be a bit err "alarmist" --- so if you load it don't pay too much attention to
zonealarm logs.
As always if in doubt go to http://www.computercops.biz and rear the reviews --- interestingly they share my own personal dislike of N**t** .

Is there really much benefit with a third party firewall over the standard XP SP2 one? Bear in mind i'm behind a router too and also run Avast
antivirus. Never have any problems whatsoever.

Another vote for Kerio PF
I use Kerio AND a hardware firewall. The hardware one keeps the b***ards out and the software one warns me when applications try to connect to the internet. Means I have a good idea of exactly which applications are connecting to the internet and for what at any time. Kerio also warns you if file versions get changed such as media player etc (know exploit).
Thank you very much gents - Kerio has now been downloaded and due to be installed. Many thanks!

sygate personal firewall-- or sygate professional firewall if you got a keygenerator. I have been running it on a server at home for going on 3
years-- with no successfull attacks.
the personal one is the one I am running now--free

PC Pro recomended Agnitum Outpost Pro 2.5 a couple of months ago
Costs 34 quid, so not too costly.
I'm using Norton myself and am quite happy. Passes all the tests PC Pro used in thier tests....
ShieldsUp scanner at www.grc.com (port test)
