steve m - 5/4/05 at 07:34 AM

Hi
I have all of sudden got the "srs" light stay on all the time (i belive it to be airbags)
of course it says "take me to the dealer" in the book
well, its a rover and very soon their wont be a dealer, and the warranty expired 3 weeks ago

any one got any ideas, that do not include take the bulb out or scrap the car

Isnt the SRS, a safety restraint system that is fitted to the seat belts?

might be but the handbook is vague

Does the 45 have variable power assistance to the power steering. Only modern car i've driven (a corsa) had a light on the dash that went out like the engine oil light on start up for the power steering assistance.

SRS could be something like 'steering response system'

Purely a shot in the dark (with a bent barrel), but make sure what the SRS light stands for.

First of all check the fuse for the SRS, also not sure if the 45 has a hidden switch to disable the airbag but if it has check it is still switched to "armed". You could also try disconnecting the battery and leaving it overnight before reconncting although I am not sure if this will work on later MEMS systems. If you disconnect the battery you will need the radio code.

Beyond that you really need to take it to the dealer --- or a large inurance approved body shop as they are approved to deal with airbags. Although it is most likely a connection fault such as the spiral spring behind the steering wheel I don't advise looking at it yourself --- but if you do decide to disconnect the battery and leave the system capacitor to discharge for a good while before dismantling anything or you will fire the air bags detonater.

If you intend keeping th car it might be worth getting an EOBDC diagnostic interface to connect the MEMS III unit to your PC --- they are cheaper than a diagnostic check at the main dealer.

thanks britishtrident
i think the bulb might fall out !!
if i remove the fuse to check will i harm or blow something

Removing the fuse is no problem but leave it out for about 10-15 minutes before replacing it.
