super size me
tri - 28/4/05 at 08:19 PM

super size me is now on what are your opinions on this ???

smudgersmb - 28/4/05 at 08:28 PM

I am watching this, but its a very one-sided view, which he has admitted to. If he went to Gordon Ramsey's place and eat all the stuff he serves, things like cake etc, then it would have the same result.

Anything taken to extremes is bad for you.

Still shocking to see what it does to his body thou

Smudger

zilspeed - 28/4/05 at 08:29 PM

Well - as I type he's just heaved for the first time....

TBH, at least we don't have the disgracefull sized portions that they have.
But - as some of the people he has spoke to have already said - nobody forces you/me/us/somebody else to eat there.

billy - 28/4/05 at 08:34 PM

Cor im getting hungry watching this

flak monkey - 28/4/05 at 08:38 PM

I saw it at the student cinema last term. Its interesting at the end...something about getting addicted to the fat or something. Anyway you'll see if you watch it...

I agree anything is bad for you if you over do it. some of the nutritional stuff they throw out later in the program is interesting though...

David

need4speed - 28/4/05 at 08:45 PM

must go and get a big mac, i'm sure the same would happen if you ate nothing but fish & chips

tri - 28/4/05 at 08:48 PM

lol i agree its not so much the wieght ya put on but the other effects ... well that s what i think is getting at i should stop watching it cuz i just keep eating cuz i getting hungry

clbarclay - 28/4/05 at 08:50 PM

A balanced diet can contain big macs, you just need plenty of different food to balance them. hence balanced.

Beer is a good one for putting on weight. My brother was a good 2 to 3 stone heavier after his fisrt year a uni than he was before.

tri - 28/4/05 at 09:02 PM

little off subject but can you go to a drive through in a seven or are they to low

phelpsa - 28/4/05 at 09:13 PM

Depends how long your arms are

clbarclay - 28/4/05 at 09:15 PM

Get the person serving you to strech a little.

Some of the people i've seen working there could do with the exercise.

Its to do with the staff discount

JoelP - 28/4/05 at 09:29 PM

didnt bother watching it, cos i object to the sensationalisation of it (is that a word?!).

actually missed it, but wouldnt've watched it anyway.

as said, what do you expect eating the same thing constantly.

and as for the supersizing thing, all food companies do upselling - i had to offer everyone coke and garlic bread at a pizza shop in the bad old days...

clbarclay - 28/4/05 at 09:30 PM

Well then they could do with a discount at a multi gym, not more big macs.

Purely from a economic point of view up selling is quite sensible, why give the customer just what he asks for when you could sell him more.

tri - 28/4/05 at 09:34 PM

they talk about kids getting fat well when you are charging like £25 for a gym meber ship d o you realy expect a teenager to pay for that instead of goingout with mates i know what i would rather do

robinbastd - 28/4/05 at 09:36 PM

You don't need to go to a gym to get fit.

tri - 28/4/05 at 09:42 PM

ok but most sports cost money as well so it still making my point

JoelP - 28/4/05 at 09:52 PM

i love macDs, and i love the gym. lucky eh?!

flak monkey - 28/4/05 at 09:57 PM

Burger king is better than MD...but its still not good food. Now fish and chips (fresh fish [ie fresh that morning], not frozen crap) is proper unhealthy good food

David

steve m - 28/4/05 at 10:40 PM

you dont get noticed tho untill you blip the throttle

(well i didnt)

mangogrooveworkshop - 28/4/05 at 10:49 PM

Its all a load of Sensationalism jorno c***P

When I came back to the UK 14 years ago and was stuck for a job, The dole said I hadnt enough stamps so I went back to Macdees to turn some cash whilst a real job turned up.
Four years before, I had come over for a working holiday to see my folks, for half a year and the rand was on its *rs* so holiday cash didnt go very far. macs was a good gig cause you could work flexi time and they fed you. I ate macs for six months that time and I never suffered.

I came back to Carnoustie to find very few openings in the area. The wife had found a job in Dunfermline so we ended up moving there. Still no job for me, so ended up giving a former staff member a call, he was now a very senior manager.
Temp job at Macs whilst I sorted out the 16 edition and other local electrical qualifications.

Now not having a lot of money I ate at work for nearly a year and a half, Macs grub and very little else. So dont believe this jurnos line BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT TWICE>

Would I do it again? Only if I was on the bones of my *rs*.

And those bleeding donuts They made great fillers when you are hungry but I cant stand em now.

Yes you can eat macs and macs only for a year and suffer very little side effects.

PS I met my wife in MACS she was my training person!

jambojeef - 28/4/05 at 10:50 PM

Way I see it is that it aint an acamedic paper - its not supposed to serve that function - its a film!

If you watched anyone reading out an article from the a nutrition journal no-one would watch it - so it has to have an element of sensationalism to get aired.

I didnt really think it was a film really - seemed like more akin to Michael Moores bowling for columbine documentary but i liked for it for what it was - an intersting TV programme with a genuine message - really made me want to go for a run though - besides - was it just me or did the dude not really look that fat at the end?!

Peteff - 28/4/05 at 11:20 PM

So don't eat vegetables. BK is weird because everything you get looks just like the picture. McDonalds is handy, they've replaced the public toilet as a handy stopping place when you are on a run anywhere.

Volvorsport - 29/4/05 at 12:17 AM

i can vouch for the Mcshit !!!

especially on the way to Le Mans !

convenience crapping while eating aswell.

niceperson709 - 29/4/05 at 02:17 AM

I have been a "Fan" of the FINE SCOTTISH RESTRAUNT for many years and although I do not want to eat it for every meal every day there are a couple of things to say it its favor , the hygene is always good , the food is cheap and where ever you go you KNOW what to expect and when you are traveling that is a good thing . Like all things ,good in moderation .
Best wishes
Iain

I was in one local to work when the sewers flooded the whole kitchen/serving area. They kept on serving... I left!
My mate, who worked there about 10 years ago, said that the hygiene rules were really strict- but he thought nothing of picking up a burger he'd just dropped on the floor and putting it in a bun as accounting for the wastage was too much hassle.

As for the film- if it encourages a few people to think a bit more about what they're shovelling into their gobs then so much better. If for no other reason than the saving to the NHS from unhealthy eating related illnesses!

I used to be an infrequent user of Mickey D's and Billy K's. But since seeing SuperSizeMe last September, with the help and support of family and friends, I've been clean ever since!

Haven't drunk Coke or Pepsi since then either. After I saw that scene at the beginning where he vomits and he's got that (what can only be called) *bucket* of Coke with 42 or something bloody teaspoons of sugar in it!
I used to drink a small 0.5lt bottle a day with lunch plus the occasional can and giving that up has been really hard!
If nothing else it's meant my teeth are noticeably whiter!!!

cheers,
James

The problem I have with MacD's is the marketing to kids, when my stepdaughter was younger she would always want to eat there 'cos of the toys. Now she's older (11) and eats a really balance diet, she can't stand the stuff.

The other thing is the way they 'hide' sugar in nearly all the savoury food - I think he said there was only 6 things on the menu without sugar

Saying that, I had a 1/4 with cheese the other day cos I was desperately hungry and there were no other options and it was bloody loverly - but if will probably be another 3 years before I go in there again.

It's food JUST for profit, with no interest in actually providing decent food to people - get them addicted and keep selling to them, as was said on the film, what's the difference between this and tobacco?

Noodle - 29/4/05 at 12:20 PM

It is really addictive stuff. I've never taken my kids there because a) My youngest is diabetic and the food at McD's is at best nutrionally inert and at worse would make his head spin round and explode and b) Once you get used to the 'hit' of the sugar and saturated fat (which I will admit tastes great), then trying to turn them back onto 'proper' grown-up food is practically impossible.

I've told the kids (elder ones) what I feel about the place and their targeting of children, but encourage them to go when their friends have parties but to be fully aware of what's going on around them.

I have friends who's kids just shout "MacDonalds! MacDonalds!" etc when they're hungry. Turning the trip onto a treat is one of the most awsomely bad peices of parenting you can do! And people wonder why their kids only want to eat crap? When I was a smoker I craved tabs, now I'm an ex-smoker I still get the pangs once in a while. I think this sort of food (from whatever branded outlet) has the same effect.

I saw a Panorama about the place once (it was 1995) and the difference between my definition of meat and their definition was so broad that I've not been back since.

Grrr. Anyway, that's off my chest now. If you want to go, then I wish you well.

Cheers,

Neil.

When at college, the local Macys was very adictive (good job I only spent 1 or 2 lunchtimes a week at college). The most adictive part though was the game cube in the corner, so fortunatly more time was spent making eyes square than spent eating.

mangogrooveworkshop - 29/4/05 at 05:59 PM

Macs got me thru some very lean years but I have fond memory`s of some of the fun we had......as well as some very hard times (college 9am till 8pm then ducks for a close till 3am) bit of sleep then college for 1pm the next day. And bigmacs for breakfast from the night before.

turbo time - 29/4/05 at 08:09 PM

Going to McDonalds is a nice surprise! Every time I go, I never know what I'm going to get. The employees speak very little English, so opening my bag of food is like unwrapping a gift on christmas morning; I never know if I have gotten what I asked for .

It's okay, I get even when I go through the drive-thru and order three or four large waters. And yes, they do provide them at no charge .

I'm still not sure what's going on with the recruiting, but the McDonalds employees hail from Latin America, and the Wendy's employees tend to be from india. I think something fishy is going on with their overseas recruiting, but I just can't prove it.
