How much gravel?
Northy - 6/5/05 at 10:44 AM

Hi,

We've got a small area of grass at the front of our new house thats a pain to cut. I want to dig it up and gravel the area, but I'm having a hard time working out how much gravel I need. How do I work it out?

Cheers

Length x width x depth required?

I'm sure that if you tell the supplier how many cubic metres you require then he can tell you how many tons that comes to (assuming that he sells by weight not volume)

to give you an idea, about 20 barrow loads is a ton.

Dont forget to put some kind of matting down to stop weeds growing through the gravel (saves a lot of time). We put some down when we gravelled around the edge of our house, and it works brilliantly. Its like thick black fabric, so it still lets the water drain away. Cant remember what its called though.

Don't forget subsidence. The depth of gravel will drop as it settles down. This means more gravel will be needed depending on how firm the ground is to start with. The gravel wants firming down well as it is laid, too reduce the ammount it subsides latter.

Just been to price it up, £180!
Just because the previous owners used posh stuff under the window and we wanted to match it up. I think I'll cut the grass

Use Pea Shingle from Wickes very cheap --- then sprinkle on a few bags those coloured glass beads that pound shops sell -- looks very avant garde but not obtrusive

Most anti weed matting will stop dandelyons and the like but some fine rooted weeds can put roots through it ---- to prevent this in adition use black polythene sheet (heavy duty bin bags) with with gaps to allow for drainage.
