Just Bought a day to day run around that was owned by a smoker, although it's been valeted and is not yellow any more inside it smells like an
old ash tray, Ive tried air freshners and Nutradol and they mask it for a few minutes then back it comes!!
Any ideas what to try??
Rip out all the interior and buy new? If you want to get shut of it - you'll be lucky!
i was in Asda the other day and they were selling a carpet freshener spray for cars etc. Small can, goes on like foam but dries very quickly - worth a
try.
Try putting some shake and vac down (i guess you have tried the neutrodol stuff already).
If it has been owned by heavy smoker i would guess the only way is to persist and air the car out a lot. Perhaps make a habit of leaving sunroof
tilted up. The valeter wouldnt have been able to get under seats etc - you may need to take them out to clean under.
Does the car have pollen / odour filter - try replacing it - the carbon stuff may pull some smells out when you run the air con. You may be able to
buy a charoal activated freshener if your car hasnt got the odour filters. Neutrodol do an air freshener that is like a gel, they are quite good. Try
putting one under each seat.

If I am remembering what my mother told me - mix bicarb of soda in water and put it on with one of those small hand spray guns for house plant - works on cloth, carpets,etc.
Mrs bob has just informed me there is a product called fabreeze which does the trick
Followed up with some smelly stuff it should smell like the car was owned by a tea total non smoker,or so i'm informed

Open the fresh air vents, run the fan at full speed and spray Fabreeze into the air intake at the base of the windscreen.
Some of the odor is trapped in the heating and a/c ductwork, under the dash etc.
If it gets rid of the smell in my trainers it should be able to cope with anything. We call it soap dodger spray cos you can freshen your clothes up
with it as well if you run short.
Fabreeze is good failing that take the seats out and leave them in the fresh air for a while. and give the carpet etc a good clean.
The fabreeze down the fan intake is a good idea aswell. Thats helps anyway.

Before Fabreeze the only option to mask the foul odour of cigarette smoke was to empty a tin of ransid sardines down the heater vent and a carton of
milk on the rear seat.
If you could make it past day six (during a warm summer), then your sense of smell would be suficiently disabled to prevent smelling much ever again.
Don't buy a car that smells is the answer
