Re-waterproofing coats (ripstop nylon)

Hi,
For whatever reason, both of my cycling coats have decided that they no longer want to be waterproof - probably too much washing!
They are both made from micro thin ripstop nylon.
Is there anything I can buy to re-waterproof them or shall I buy a new coat?

get yourself to mitchells, and get some fabsil iirc. it's in an aerosol tin, spray it on, and it brings the waterproofing up like new. i used it on my waterproof for duke of edinburgh, and it was better than when it was new for that expedition. still kept me dry when i took the indy out in the wet.

think it was about a fiver a tin. cheaper than a new coat.

Project loom is looming!

Just waiting for the scuttle/dash fibreglassing to cure and the paddle shift to arrive and then we can start.

Just a hand at the beginning to route and plan everything would help as I'm sure it will hurt my brain!

yep, fabsil is fantastic. after coming from the western Isles and serving in the forces i know all about being cold and wet.

Pat - good luck - the 'blade loom is quite easy... just follow it logically. Any questions just ask - I'll help you all I can.

I seem to remember fabsil is designed for tents and such like, very waterproof but doesn't breathe. You can get nikwax spray-on or wash-in waterproofing agent that will breathe (use the spray-on only on gore-tex - on the outside)

Once you've finished spraying the fabsil onto your coats, try spraying at a naked flame! The stuff is awesome, it releases a big black mushroom shaped cloud of smoke that looks like a small nuclear explosion.

I don't think I'm a pyromaniac...I mean spraying aerosols onto naked flames is perfectly normal behaviour isn't it?

i didn't mention that, as i thought it might scare people, but it is a seriously impressive sight. i smelt the paraffin content and it set the wheels turning.

You can get fabsil specifically for coats and breathable fabric.

Will get myself down to Mitchells some time this week...

...and play with whatever is left with a match!
