Virus's & Trojan's
Hellfire - 29/9/05 at 12:13 AM

Despite having two firewalls and a constantly updates virus program I did a scan on my PC today.

I used HIJACKTHIS, EWIDO and CLEANUP.

In safe mode, I manually cleaned my temp internet file and cache. CLEANUP then deleted another 260,000+ files not cleaned and released 150MB of my drives. I then ran EWIDO and it found 65 more infected files!!!!

My PC now starts up like lightening, internet connection is faster and generally runs must faster cos of all the cr4p I removed.

The software is shareware so I'll stick it on our website when I get chance!

That's exactly why I use Opera instead of Internet Exploiter.

Think ur preaching to the converted istr Hellfire like me is a Firefox/Thunderbird user --- having said that I suspect there is something lurking on my NT4 box that isn't being picked up trouble is EWIDO won't work on NT. The root problem is Windows, when it is exposed to internet it will always be vulenrable if windows existed in a standalone world it would a near perfect operating system for home use.

Only real way to reduce infections to zero is run Linux, this box is running Mepis 3.3.2 which is quite a large step better than the prevous 3.3.1 version especially at handling removable flash memory. Linux desktop development is moving at lightening pace.

Of course if we all ran Linux it would be subject many more virus threats but it would never be as easy a target as MS Windows.

Im using BT broadband 2meg and have noticed resently a change in speed it seems to be slower. also any graphics that should appear on screen come up as small boxes with crosses in them. What causes this ?

Firefox user through and through... occasional pop-up's but nothing as bad as Enternit Exploiter I think due to Firefox gaining in popularity scripts written specifically for it will become more prominent. Here's hoping Mozilla keep on top of it all...

Dave - sounds like you need to reset your internet settings. You may have blocked images.

You may need to tweak your mtu setting with "Cablenut"
Also what browser are you using ? if it is Mozilla or Firefox you may need to turn off ip6 networking or need to tweak your mtu setting with "Cablenut"
BT really aren't the best people to get broadband from when I was with BT Openworld the BT DNS servers kept going down.
