Tin Top Engine Problems Peugeot

Friends mother has a Peugeot 406 2.0 D
V reg.

The altnerator belt started to fall apart, now theres only half the width of the belt left on the pulleys.

She stopped the car because of the noise the belt made as it broke up and left it at side of road.

Then tried it in the morning, there was a loud clunk and now it wont start.

Turns over without any nasty noises, but doesnt even try to fire up.

Is there any reason why this could be, the only thing i can think of is the belts got caught, jammed the bottom end briefly, causing the cam belt to slip. Hence the clunk and now no starting.

Anyone else got any ideas?

Cheers

Had the same problem with a Xantia (same engine ) as you suspect debris from the alternator belt manages to get inside timing cover and into timing belt causing belt to jump. Head off by the sound of it . May be worth taking off the cover and timing the engine , theres a small hole in the block near the starter to insert a bent rod to locate into flywheel and you need. 3 x8mm bolts to time cam and pump .Have been lucky with one of these once.

Sounds nasty. The bits of belt get into the casing and usually causes the crank pulley to jump..

We had this problem alot with the peugeot partners at work. Id time it up and try it before u take the head off. If it turns over normally and sounds the same u may get away with it.

And the news is, engines had it. It's a HDi as well

Not sure if it's a 90 or 110, think it's a 90.

Anyone know how i can tell for sure?
