Is there anyone on here who lives not so far away (Dewsbury) that can service boilers?
Mine's playing up and won't ignite when switched to heating or hot water.
Hasn't been serviced for over a year.
Cheers,
Pat...
You can do it yourself if you want to. You arent ment to though... so shhh
Is it sparking? If so then the gas jet has probably got full of crap. If its not sparking then the ignition electonics might have failed. they arent
usually difficult to replace though.
Disclaimer: if for some reason you blow yourself up by servicing gas appliances yourself, I hold absolutely no responsibilty for it!

does it not fire at all or fires then stops after few seconds?
Sometimes it fires, but then is only on for 5 minutes.
Has been clicking a lot for the last 6 months like it's trying to fire up again once it's already on.

check your pump! Remove the chorme plug in the end and see if the rotor spins free
also check it when its running if you can stall it change it!
My boiler had the same symptoms! £35 pump from wickes, easy to change
What type of boiler do you have? (name, make gc number) does it make any other noises apart from trying to light (when its on does it bang alot)
Do you habe any motorised valves on the system?
YOU COULD service it yourself, BUT...IF anything went wrong like the case seal getting damaged, things not put back together properly it could be very
dangerous, especially if you have a positive pressured boiler like a potterton profile. For around £30 is it really worth it?? (please don't
think I'm being a stick in the mud)
I work for british gas and some of the things you see frightens the hell out of me, there are some lucky people out there

Give a few more details I'll try and do an online diagnostic

Cheers Mark
Pat - what does she look like?
I know a single man who may be up for it...

Hi,
Boiler is a kitchen mounted IDEAL CLASSIC.
No banging, but has made a few hissy, maybe a bit of air in the system, sounds recently.
Just doesn't want to stay fired up, and sometimes clickety clickety clicks for 2 or 3 minutes before lighting up.
Was brand new when I move in to my brand new house 6 years ago.

could be a couple of things, blocked injector (unlikely) pilot solenoid knackeded or spark ht lead arching out on the case,
remove the bottom panel (two screws) should see the gas valve, should have two solenoids on it, take the resistance of them both, the reading you will
get will be the same for both or near enough (with out the wires on so turn the power off) if they are ok might sound a bit rough but try moving the
spark ht lead up and down a bit where it goes in to the case, if it's arching then moving it slightly normally identifies the problem, you can
tell by sound if it's arching or not. (when it's arching the spark sounds quiet in comparison to a normal spark)
I have had these two as problems before, never a blocked injector, but there is always a first time
hope I made it clear enough.

Does the pilot go out when the burners should be cutting in? If so it's probably the thermocouple.
Thanks everyone, but I don't really want to go poking arond inside the boiler with winter coming.
If it was summer, I'd have a go no probs.
Also, I have a baby due in 7 days - so don't want to do any more damage.
Looks like I'll have to call someone expensive!
Pat...
keep me in a job.... Call British Gas and get the problem fixed for £132. All parts and labour included (plug, plug!)
