As an amusing family wagon, I've got a Toyota Lucida 4WD diesel auto.

I don't drive it very much (I don't drive much at all these days), but on a journey last September I noticed that the gearbox wouldn't settle around 65-70mph, going up and down, up and down, up and down ad nauseum. At 80mph, it stayed in top and all was OK.


However, on a couple of short journey's recently, the gearbox is jumping all over the shop and it's peeing me off.

It holds 1st for ages when pulling off, if I back off the throttle it goes into second OK, but jiggers up and down around 30 miles and hour. Even when coasting downhill the revs rise and fall like a whore's drawers.

Anyone familiar with auto boxes?

could be a pressure prob,try changing the oil and filter on the box,check if it smells burnt as well.
how does the kickdown operate,cable too tight?

could be a sensor in the gearbox?

i have a Hyundai Trajet Auto and that had a sensor go and it got locked in 3rd (just before a holiday in france).

the bad new is that the new generations of auto are electronic and sensor controled and there are very few people with the knowlege to fix them (read EXPENSIVE), It cost me £680 to have the sensor replaced.

its not like the good old days any more, too many electronics.

Could be a few things --- in addition to theconrodkid list the most obvious is fluid level.

have a look at any vacuum pipes for leaks as im sure the box works on road speed and engine vac for steady state running with cable kickdown for full steam. probably a sensor coming from one of the vac pipes but worth checking for splits as poor vac would signal more throttle opening hence holding gears and as you back off the throttle more vac allowing a change up hth
