Confused but excited. - 15/2/06 at 03:03 PM

I take it then, that it's not nicotine that your fingers smell of.

uklee70 - 15/2/06 at 03:09 PM

You have started something here !!!!

Fantastic

Went to dublin to all the busy bars and clubs all no smoking came home pissed as a fart but not smelling of smoke!!!!!

My GF is a singer and comes home from the clubs stinking of smoke and what makes me laugh is there's always a sign for the acts please do not use smoke machines!!!!

My view is if you want to smoke be my guest but don't involve me.

dave1888 - 15/2/06 at 03:42 PM

C'mon the smokers

viatron - 15/2/06 at 03:49 PM

havrnt got time to get into this, time for fag!! Youll all be sorry when your taxes go up!

Mac

DarrenW - 15/2/06 at 03:54 PM

i wonder if taxes wil stabilise when health care costs reduce - daft question really!!!

Only memorable occasion on that date is TotalKitCar Live at Oulton. tyres will be a smoking on that day - unless that is banned as well.

I really dont see why pubs that have a seperate room cant have the bar for smokers and the lounge for non-smokers / diners. Isnt that a novel idea??? i wonder how many pubs put smoking huts up with patio heaters. To be honest i think it will be more disgusting to see drinkers standing outside have a fag, or even a cigarette for that matter Hope the paths outside dont become ashtrays.

as some funny git said, thats like having a pissing area in the pool! The air conditioning is rarely good enough to stop smoke escaping.

i say get the lost revenue back by doubling the duty on them, would also make it harder for kids to start.

JAG - 15/2/06 at 04:10 PM

Are you guys not worried about this Nanny state getting round to banning other, non-pc pasttimes?

Like driving homebuilt, noisy, fast and impractical sports cars?

Afterall there are plenty of good, regulated cars we can all drive.

Why bother letting a minority spoil it for the rest of the population!!!

Banning smoking is just another step to making everyone conform to what the majority think is right. That's a long wedge and this is the thin end - God help us all

dave1888 - 15/2/06 at 04:23 PM

Of course we could all be wrong this date might be Mango's birthday
Im a smoker and i would like to see fags be as much as a £10 a pack they should also give these patches etc to help you stop for free.

quattromike - 15/2/06 at 05:51 PM

My work say they are going to put a ban on smokin during working hours, so people who want a fag have to go outside during their breaks for a smoke. I dunno if it'll happen though. Some people say it's against their human rights! Well do people who don't smoke not have human rights? like being able to go about their day without breathing in someone elses reek!
If it comes to the point where they say no smoking inside but you can go outside an smoke if you want, I'm gonna start smoking just so I can get an extra break when ever I want.

What I can't quite get my head round is this.
If his royal Tonyness and his puppets have decided that we need a ban. (Presumably because other inconsiderate buggers are harming the rest of us) Why isn't it coming into force until 18 months time? are we immune to the effects and stink until summer 2007?
I just love being an opinionated old git

Triton - 15/2/06 at 07:45 PM

Only snag is...ban smoking and those that smoke and you will have to pay more tax

Triton - 15/2/06 at 07:48 PM

And yep I smoke so I must own a good chunk of the NHS by now

gazza285 - 15/2/06 at 08:27 PM

Just missing a good chunk of lung as well though.

Work it out though. The figures in the Mirror say £8billion raised in revenue and £1.5billion costs to the NHS. Total revenue raised is £6.5billion per year. Total working population is just over 30million people earning an average wage of £26,000 a year. Cost per individual worker is therefore £216 per year, less than a 1% rise in base rate tax. How much does the average smoker spend of fags? According to the Telegraph £1493. So if everybody gave up smoking at once the average smoker would be nearly £1300 better off and the rest of us £216 worse off. But would the £1280 the smoker saves not be spent on other things? If the total amount saved were spent on other goods then the VAT on that would be £224 a year. 12million smokers each paying an extra £224 a year in VAT is £2.688billion.

So if everybody gave up smoking and spent the money on other stuff, the country would be £3.8billion worse off, which brings the total tax burden per head of working population down to £127 per year, less than a half a% rise in base rate tax.

I do get f***ing angry with people who tell me they're saving me money in taxes by smoking.
May be but you're also killing me! F**k off as a certain scottish ex welder comedian might say.

Was going to keep out of this since discussions like this always just end up with bad blood and no agreement. But then I thought what the hell, some points for both sides of the debate are being missed

Firstly cards on the table, I'm not a smoker (had approx 20 ciggies in my life all why p*ssed ), though I have had cancer and Chemotherapy. So I might be a tad biased I also lived in Vancouver when they introduced their ban on smoking in pubs/resturants/bars (and almost everywhere else).

1. Seen plenty of people with Lung cancer - it's a very unpleasent way to die (and they did on the ward I was on) it's actually even worse for their wives/kids. Saddest thing was seeing people with a drip in their arm standing outside having a drag.

2. As well as getting your taste working again you save around £1500 a year if you're on 20 a day. [6 of Rons finest locosts a year ]

3. The pubs/resturants in Vancouver claimed before the ban that they would all go out of business. A lot of them actually seemed to do rather better after the ban as families started returning and bringing their hungry kids. Strangly none smelt of farts or cheap perfume

On the other side

4. If you want to do the tax calculation properly you also need to take into account the pensions that don't get paid to people who die earlier due to their addictions. The pensions crisis will get a lot worse if the smokers stop killing themselves early!

5. The smokers who can't/won't quit will stay at home pumping even more second hand smoke into their kids.

andyps - 16/2/06 at 01:41 PM

I am a non-smoker and would much prefer pubs etc. to be smoke free. However, I don't agree with a ban because I think in a free society people should be allowed to make their own decisions. The governement have never suggested that tobacco should be made illegal (can you imagine it would be allowed if it was to be introduced now!) so there should be less restrictions rather than more. I didn't agree with the advertising ban either.

My solution is that there should be an air purity regulation - in other words, provided a pub etc. can guarantee that the air is smoke free through appropriate ventilation/air con/filtering then smoking should be allowed. It would then be up to the pubs to choose to pay for air purification or ban smoking.

Basically, I think JAG is right. We can't accept bans on something just because we don't like that activity and not expect an activity we do like to be banned at some later point.

bob - 16/2/06 at 02:12 PM

LOL

Would the smokers in the prisons still be able to get a snout ration ?

I don't agree with what you said here
If you said the same about heroin, alot of people use it with no ill effect and no harm to anyone else so you might think well it's a free society they should decide if they want it or not. But, alot of people who unfortunatly get mega addicted, still no harm to anyone else, but, when they run out of money to fuel their addiction they end up stealing, often from people close to them and people get hurt and offten people are seriosly injured because some druggy decides they want to mug them for the money in their wallet and end up getting stabed or sumit. so in my mind they are illegal to stop this happening and TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE
Although a ban on ciggys is not the same thing at all I still belive the ban is in place TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE from passive smoking.
It's just what I think. But who am I?

BKLOCO - 16/2/06 at 06:14 PM

quattromike I think we are singing from the same songsheet.

I've nothing against smokers in general. It doesn't really bother me and probably most of us are working with materials or substances that are just as harmfull.
However if a company gives smokers an area for smoking and the average worker uses it for 5 fags at 7mins a fag thats 35 mins a day. Almost 3 hours a week or 12 hours a month or 144 hours a year.
So that being the case I reckon non smokers should get an extra 3.6 weeks paid holiday a year. Now it is starting to bother me.
Also I'm all in favour of clubs and pubs being smoker free. Especially in the morning when you pick up your clothes from a night out. If you've got a hangover it's almost instant boak when the smell hits you.

JoelP - 16/2/06 at 10:53 PM

thank f*ck we dont really live in a free society - most people wouldnt know what to do with it.

Simon - 16/2/06 at 11:01 PM

Free society?

Nah mate, world is run by the Illuminati/Freemasons who are building their own New World Order!

Just for the record... The money the government makes out of taxes on fags is almost double the amount that it is estimated smokers cost the NHS.

Personally I think that this legislation goes far to far and is an infringment of civil liberties.

that's my rant over and I'm off for a fag.
