locost builders site!!!!!!!!1
kev R1 - 4/5/06 at 10:38 PM

i've been a member of this site now for almost a year and i really couldn't have built my current car without it! i've appreciated all the help from team hellfire, leigh sheldon, chris mason and all the rest of the decent guys on here! but there seems to be a few who can't help but contradict themselves and just try to find an arguement wherever possible!
come on guys we all drive similar cars and all, hopefully, have the same interest in speed, handling, performance and general skill in building these cars!
so come on carry on the reason why i joined this forum! help, humour, and decent guys building top cars! and forget all the 0-60 fall outs and all this s+$t which engine is best, just enjoy it for what you've got and what you enjoy!
sorry if this sounds like a rant! but "each to there own!!"we should all help each other!!!

skydivepaul - 4/5/06 at 11:01 PM

here here....
I'm with you on this one Kev. We are all enthuisasts, mad scientists and nutters and i hate all the unecessary bitching that goes on, albeit occaisionally on the site.
We all share a common interest and it came home to me today when i was going about my normal business in Bradford and I heard the unmistakeable sound of a seven!!! I turned round and saw a seven type car (not sure if it was a locost, indy or whatever) drive past me and it brought a smile to my face. nice spring day and and an open top car blasting past.

lets all kiss and make up...................not that i'm gay or owt

live life. have fun
cheers

Paul

Fair points Kev. Im sure there are some 'experts' on here who arent old enough to own a car and some who have never built a kit car nor have any aptitude to do so. I for one put up my Bullshit defenders when posting. I was always taught to filter what people say. In some ways i find these people entertaining. I will never post names as these comments are in my own oppinion.

As you point out there is a core set of members whos experience is awesome, whos advice is hugely welcome and without put themselves out to be top people. I also applaud these and thank them unreservedly.
I always treat others as i wish to be treated myself.

The bitching and futile performance discussions are annoying but at the end of the day theres nowt as queer as folk and it is the idiots that make the rest of us look good at the end of the day.

muzchap - 5/5/06 at 07:28 AM

As my mate says there's :

"Talkers and Doers"

Well I'm definitely doing and will only offer assistance if I've specifically used that product - or am attempting it myself.

A lot of 'mis-information' is regurgitated and then becomes 'urban myth'.

If I get real stuck - I'll either ask NS Dev (Nat) or Mike, Hellfire or the usual 'Big Guns' and people that have actually done it a shout - or give the boys @ MAC#1 a shout - but as they're always flat out, try to avoid wasting their time

I think a forum promotes a certain sense of drama - so this should be taken into account when judging peoples responses

Hellfire - 5/5/06 at 07:28 AM

What brought that on Kev? There have been lots of schoolyard falling out's lately on the forum. Just let all the CR4P flow under you, like it does when it's in the gutter. Ignore it and it will soon go away...

Steve

The gold-to-crap ratio is still very good - I just ignore the crappy stuff.

I sometimes get uppity about the dumb questions that get asked; then I remember that I asked the same questions - and dumber ones - just a few years ago. At that point I shut up and try to answer as best I can.

Peteff - 5/5/06 at 08:24 AM

I'm thinking of building a 4x4 BEC with an engine driving each wheel, which engines would be best for the front wheels? Do you think 600bhp is enough in a car with 4 engines, etc. I am drawing up some plans but I've eaten a lot of my crayons so they will mostly be in yellow and brown. If you ignore it and don't take it serious or encourage this thinking they will post again when it's built or fade into oblivion.
My standard pinto is the fastest car in the world by the way.

NS Dev - 5/5/06 at 08:25 AM

I'd echo what David has just said, spot on summary.

Certainly much better/more wide ranging tech info on here than most other sites.

I still sometimes come out with some really crap advice when I haven't thought things through properly and got a touch of the foot in mouth disease!

Usually try and delete my posts if this happens so anybody doing a search in the future doesn't get too confused!!

welderman - 5/5/06 at 08:29 AM

Well said Kev, i agree that some folk on here do take things a little too far. But i suppose because it's a public forum and everyone has their own opinions.

So after that Kev how fast will your's go.

joe.

David Jenkins - 5/5/06 at 08:35 AM

The only thing that bothers me is when some self-styled pundit says "this is the only way to do something, and anything else is total rubbish" when what he means is "this is the way I did it, and it worked OK for me". There's a hell of a difference between those two statements!

When I answer a question I do try to answer it the second way - don't always get it right...

David

muzchap - 5/5/06 at 08:48 AM

Absolutely - I've found there's many ways to achieve the same shitty result

Each of them meticulously planned until the ineviatable slip, or phone rings and loose concentration or something

I think 'age' teaches you there's no such thing as Black and White - just many shades of grey.

The 'one size fits all' approach is lunacy of the highest order and should be reserved for supermarket produce

That said - my Zetec is the quickest by far and my build is more superior than anything I've yet seen!

Oi! I was about to make a similar comment, and I'm only 23 (until tomorrow anyway).

Peteff - 5/5/06 at 09:23 AM

I think you're getting confused with colour blindness there, or are you having a dig at my hair .

BKLOCO - 5/5/06 at 09:32 AM

No sorry you've all got it totally wrong (again)
It's a North / South thing!!
Daan saaf we're allways right, have the biggest, the best and definately the fastest of everything.
Ooop Narth you basicly just like, ferrets and pigeons!!

OK. I'll get me coat.

wildchild - 5/5/06 at 10:06 AM

oh and just to stir a bit:

do you think there's now more threads with people having silly arguments/flaming/etc

or are there more threads debating whether there is too much of the above, whether we need moderators, etc.

let's talk about cars instead!

Absolutely correct my green friend. Just to re-iterate up North is grim, we are at least 100 years behind the saaaf, our countryside is full of holes (mines) and what greenery is left is either full of whippets or pigeon crees. There is no reason absolutely at all why anyone would want to visit the North - oh its cold and always raining as well.

Being Northern born and bred i try and fuel that rumour as much as possible - wouldnt want the truth to get out and for us to get flooded with foreigners would we

No such thing as a dumb question. A question is only easy if you know the answer.
What does get to me is dumb answers by those who have no idea what they are talking about!! To be honest that is just real life tho and not bespoke to this site.

Fantastic site. No we dont need moderators. Freedom of speech is what makes this site great. I used to jump in to the bitchfest posts but now cant be bothered - just stick to the techy stuff. i love being able to help others now.

I read that as "just stick to the tetchy stuff"! Gives it a whole new meaning...

Did I miss something?

I thought it was all good at the moment

We do occasionally get the "how do I fit my RR Merlin V12 into a Locost chassis made of aluminium?" type of query... I usually ignore those, and just wait until they either go away, or get a surge of realism.

wildchild - 5/5/06 at 12:13 PM

that would be an interesting challenge!

Begin by lengthening the engine bay by three foot or so....

splitrivet - 5/5/06 at 12:43 PM

Right thats it I'm going to build a 4x4 locost with a RR merlin engine on each wheel and a sail, that white haired owd fossil Petef aint going to outdo me.

As for an answer to this thread I havent got one but if I did have one it would be totally right so there.
Cheers,
Bob

D Beddows - 5/5/06 at 04:40 PM

I can remember what it was like building a car before there was even TOL let alone this site! and if I remember correctly a couple of pictures from an article in CCC and Rons rubbish book weren't realy all that much help....... (and we lived in a shoe box on the hard shoulder of the M56 etc etc ) Once you learn enough to be able to filter out the b*ll*cks on here it is a quite amazing resource and long may it continue.

The thing I find the most amazing is though that if your central heating explodes at 2 in the morning or you need to find out the correct proceedure for artificialy inseminating a turkey or whatever there will almost invariably be someone on here who can help and, unlike on some other forums, you wont get serious abuse for asking a non car related question.

So for that I can put up with a bit of muppetry every now and again

DarrenW - 5/5/06 at 10:05 PM

You lot are mad. Give up now the useless banter - my pintosaurus is the fastest car ever.

Tonight i got the pigeons in and put whippet away. I was gannon yam when me pulled up in his 6yr old Koenigsegg. It is a touch rapid but i left him for dead. Only car i cant beat is one of those Makpower Nova's (or Nurver if you come from Blyth).

Guinness - 5/5/06 at 10:43 PM

how man, there's nowt the marra with the quaint seaside fishin village of blith!
