Morning folks.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever used the Plasti-dip style plastic coating that is sold by the likes of Frosts etc? I'm wondering if it will be suitable for use on an aluminium contraption for taking aerial photos from a kite, in order to protect it from rough surfaces on touchdown.

If anyone has used it on aluminium (or steel for that matter) could you let me know how durable it has been?

If i wanted to protect a camera i would use foam to absord shock. Rubber would need to be pretty thick to protect it, so would be heavy.

I didn't word the question too well sorry, I actually meant that I am looking to protect the actual frame from scratches, corrosion etc. The camara is mounted to the frame via a foam rubber cushion to absorb any impacts and protect from vibration.

I'm basically looking for something to paint/coat the ally bits with that is going to be resistant to scratches and abrasion, when it is sat on the ground, or is landing etc. The Plasti-dip stuff caught my eye, as it is like a permanently flexible coating that should be resistant to abrasion/scratches. I'm just not sure of its manufacturers claims

Not sure about the corrosion aspect, but I have used it to make rubberised grips for some old tools. I've also used it to cover electrical connectors. If you give it two coats or more and leave it to dry for a day or so it would be very good for scratch resistance. Can be cut with a stanley blade fairly easily so as long as what's rubbing against it isn't too sharp it should do the job.

You might also consider wrapping the ali frame in insualtion tape! would probably be lighter AND cheaper.

I've used the spray on stuff it to bling my hoses; it doesn't seem to be that durable.

about £ 10 doesn't seem too much to lose.

I've never tried the spray version, but the dip version should be exactly what you're looking for. I've used it on the handles of tools that I've mad, and it's pretty strong (you need to dip it more than once, though, to build up a little thickness). In fact, I used black Pastidip to replace the ugly faux-wood plastic handle on the handbrake handle in my Locost, and I'm chuffed at the result! Several dips (3 or 4) brought it up to about 1/4" thickness.
