Simply mind boggling

Do you think the earth is big?

smart51 - 7/12/06 at 06:13 PM

Yes.

I bet that big sun is warm close up.

Liam - 7/12/06 at 06:14 PM

Crikey!! I knew our sun was a small star, but

Check this article out if you want to visualise the scale of the solar system compared to the planets in it. Equally amazing...

Nice, makes you think though, we really are small beer.

Like HHGTTG said "mostly harmless".

The BBC compared HHGTTG with the internet today:-

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was an electronic book that tapped into a vast database of information, invaluable for its users, "though it has many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate". Sounds just like the internet then!

So that's alright then!
Don't want to knacker the paint when it's done.

I thought stars were, like, star shaped ?

I'll get my coat

Simon - 7/12/06 at 09:12 PM

Noooooo, they're all flat

Very impressive pics, but if they don't depress you, look up pics taken by the Hubble known as the HDF (Hubble Deep Field).

The Hubble was pointed at a fairly sparse region of space, for 14 days. The picture from it was the equivalent of
looking at 2sqmm at arms length.

Over 3000 galaxies were counted!

Depressing huh

Or inspiring, it depends whether you look at the magnificence of the thing or the smallmindedness of mankind.

And there as too be something out there.............

Here is the NASA page on the UDF that was done with the hubble. Very interesting reading, and i think the pics are stunning.

We are all just microbes living on a speck of dust floating round a light bulb and every day someone comes into the room and switches on the light, and then they switch it off again and leave us in the dark. I think too much sometimes, but other times I don't think at all. I'm not sure which I prefer. One day the bulb will go and we'll all have to wait for a new one from the cupboard under the stairs.

Was that "Or" or "Awe" Both apply, surely!

I think it's kind of depressing that we have so many galaxies to populate, let alone planets.

Much as I like to think there is (or has been) life out there, I'm beginning to wonder if it's going to be down to the human race to (re)populate.

Trouble is, I object to journeys more than a couple of hours long

If we're off repopulating the galaxy I'd best sort out a windscreen and some weather gear.

Chipshops and peanuts

It's probable best not to think too hard about the vastness of the universe and
the utter insignificance of the Earth. It screws with your mind too much.......

We really are small.................................

I listened to a R4 program today about the Leviathan of Parsonstown telescope, what do you think?

Probably going to need to pack some sandwiches and a thermos, just in case we get peckish on the way.
