Telephone text re an earthquake
steve m - 15/7/08 at 02:37 PM

About an hour ago I had a text phone call on my landline and it said " we have just had a 6.5 eaerthquake, but we are all fine" the no it came from was 07988
*******

the no is not any one we know (think we know!)

i wrote the no down so i could find out who it was, but now when ive gone back and done 1471 no number is listed

very weird ?

plus i cant even find any news about a big earthquake

Is it a hoax, or a spam call ?

Sounds rip offish to me.
Cheers,

Might be similar to the spam emails that went round after the chinese earthquake (and still are, bizarrely).

Don't call - it's either a wrong number or some sort of con

Why what could happen? They already have his number. Perhaps someone just pressed the wrong contact when sending the text.

As above, probably just a wrong number. We get those talk/text things all the time at home, and half of the time it's a wrong number.

No2 son (works in seismometers - you know what I mean) reports 6.4 in the Greek islands 35.983N 27.785E. Light structural but population risk to 4k persons - not to say injury just based on pop. density in that location.
You can also visit www.usgs.com and look for a live feed earthquake reports.
Cheers, Pewe

I think in the UK you can send a text from a mobile to a landline and it talks out the message.
Could be wrong though as I dont live there anymore.

Try googling the number

mistergrumpy - 16/7/08 at 07:27 AM

Text a landline? Surely you'd just ring it and say what you have to?

It's a brilliant service for winding up your mates. Brings a childish giggle to my face every time I hear a computer generated posh middle-aged woman hurling abuse that'd make a builder blush. Try it

and death threats sound funny too, apparently!

Well, we seem to have got a bit further with my weird text

yes there was an eartquake in Greece, and yes some family is safe, but nothing to do with my family ?

try sending a text to your home no with the following
"ken dodds dads dog is dead"

always makes me laugh
