Just going to service it myself and reset the message. VW/Audi etc are fairly straight forward, BMWs need a tool to plug in usually.
You can buy the tool from a few places, German Swedish French do them I know.
service light is on (and has been for a whiloe actually...) on my car, the car seems down on power a bit from what i remember. does the service light coming on make the ecu run at a reduced power or anything?
heard a rumour that BMW's do this. I think from here. The idea being that when you get the car serviced it feels a lot better therefore you feel
you're getting value for money.
Then again it could just be that the new air filter is lettering more air through so it accelerates easier.
or it could just all be in the mind.

Engines run better after a good service. Thats why it needs to be done.
Get it serviced is the simple answer, and also to answer your comment about BMW reducing the power when the light comes on, They don't do that,
its all in your head.
On my Fabia the service indicator has come on and im sure it seems quicker than ever!

If you google for the tool it shows you how to make one.
Basically you have to short one of the pins to earth and that switches it off.

i haven't got the time to do it myself... plus its too fiddly. needs to be done before thursday really. i think the garage i use will have the reset tool, so i don't mind paying them to do it really

A lot of newish cars nothing is actually serviced on the engine (apart from oil and filter) until 60,000 miles --- nothing is touched not even the plugs.
mine's coming up for 140,000 miles now 
think it'll need new plugs, but having sait that, had an MOT last month, and the gas analisys was
VERY good, and well below the max limits
