Well I've got a new job and it's all change.
I'm moving from Edinburgh to Oxford to work for Nuffield Orthopedic Hospital.
So it will be an interesting trip south in the MK Indy!
So who is about in Oxford? What are the good / bad places to live in Oxford?
We were down having an ititial look arround a few days ago.
Looked at Brize Norton, just to check how close the air base was. We were shown a property by the Estate Agent and we asked about the aircraft noise.
He commented, 'the vendor said that she hardly noticed the noise'. A minute later a transport plane took off, wholey moley, what a noise, I
tried shouting but could not be heard, you could feel the vibration from the engines and then smelt the kerosine for a few minutes after. If I was
blindfolded, I'd of sworn I was on the runway. But it did make us all laugh. Needless to say, that property is off the potential list!
Cheers
Ian
Is Scutter still at Brise Norton?
Hiya,
Lived in Oxford for 5 years, and still work in Witney (not far from Brize where you were).
Property prices are steep anywhere in Oxford itself, going outside gets a bit cheaper, but still pricey. I'm not sure what Edinburgh's like
in comparison!
If you're working at the Nuffield, are you working shifts? Getting around Oxford in peak times can be frustrating - especially if you're
coming from the west (Brize side).
Places to avoid in Oxford - Barton always had a bad reputation, along with Blackbird Leys. Where else you look at depends on what you want out of the
place you live. Abingdon's an OK market town not too far outside, and there are plenty of nice villages about.
Feel free to u2u me if you're looking at anywhere specific, and I'll give you whatever knowledge I have....
Cheers
Vince

Looking at a
few more houses in the area, majority seemed to be owned by really old deaf people!!

You'll please the Conservative 'Think Tank' then, abandoning the hopeless north to move to the prosperous south!
lol.
Oh aye.
Dunno whether you southerners ahve seen this BBC news story but being from Bradford,
I'm eyeing up properties down there too, before the powers that be take off and nuke Bradford from orbit.
You southerners will have to crack on with a large mosque building program
Anyone in London, Cambridge or Oxford have room for me and the family ? We only need a bit of room for us, a bit of room for the Whippets and an empty
bath to store me coal ?

Marsten, Old Marsten, Risinghurst are a bit better than the likes of Cowley, Blackbird Leys etc.
If you want to live somewhere nice in Oxford like Jericho, St Giles, Summertown or Headington it will cost a fortune.
North Hinksey is OK, but is the other side of the city.
You could look at Kidlington, Begbroke and Yarnton. These are all north of the city and would mean you relied heavily on the ring road - which always
chokes on the north side at Wolvercote and the Greenman roundabout at Headington.
If you want to live in a village then the best bet would be north of the city with access via B4027 and then the cross country route in from Stanton
St John. Places like Bletchingdon, Islip, Woodeaton, Elsfield are all within 20-30 minutes of the hospital if you time it right.
Oxford can be a nightmare, I commute from 10 miles north of Oxford to Maidenhead and can do that in 40-50 mins in the morning. If I needed to cross
Oxford to get to the science park in the south then it would be half the distance, but take 1 hr to 1hr 15mins.
Cheers
