when will we overtake TOL......
stephen_gusterson - 20/2/03 at 12:10 AM

well, 1 year and 1 day ago, mr Ison and I co-incidentally joined this group.

at that time it had about 220 members.

TOL had about 1100.

they now have around 1450 and we have, what, 1050?

So, when do you recon we will overtake them in numbers.

Metal Hippy™ - 20/2/03 at 12:13 AM

I say about July...

More people will have had a chance with the (hopefully) improving weather and will find us...

Any earlier and people aren't thinking about Summer toys I would guess...

Rich.

philgregson - 20/2/03 at 10:09 AM

I'll go for June then just to be contrary - so anyone hanging round the other list late in May beware as I WILL NOT LOOSE!

T O L must be stopped - they will not tolerate views other then their own - THAT IS NOT MY VIEW AND I WILL NOT TOLERATE IT! (Ha thats got them - they'll disapear in a puff of logic now!)

I suggest that we recall all our members from T O L who are not involved in essential tasks (for their own safety). Then we give T O L 2 weeks to de-post otherwise we shall remove their analy retentive posts by force.

If they won't do what we want then we'll make them - thats democracy and free speech for you.

Herr General Philissimo (leader of the democratic revolution against all those who disagree with him).

David Jenkins - 20/2/03 at 10:17 AM

B*ll*cks!

David

(member of most lists and forums...)

philgregson - 20/2/03 at 10:44 AM

That reply is exactly the kind of intolerance that I mean.

I WILL NOT TOLERATE INTOLERANCE!

You'll be the first against the wall come the revolotion.

philgregson - 20/2/03 at 10:45 AM

revolotion - It's like a revolution but good for your skin!

Phil.

David Jenkins - 20/2/03 at 11:22 AM

...I think today's motto is appropriate!

(see below)

David

P.S. I'm only joking - well, a bit, anyway...

Metal Hippy™ - 20/2/03 at 12:37 PM

My signature is about the best reply to that...

David Jenkins - 20/2/03 at 12:42 PM

Touché!

philgregson - 20/2/03 at 12:49 PM

I seem to remember that he was some sort of annoying 'Hero in a turtle shell' wasn't he?

Phil.

David Jenkins - 20/2/03 at 01:22 PM

How old are you?

I wasn't very old when Touché Turtle was on - and I'm no spring chicken!

David

Metal Hippy™ - 20/2/03 at 01:24 PM

It's been repeated many times for years.

Even I remember Touché Turtle and I'm only a youngster...

philgregson - 20/2/03 at 01:31 PM

Dave,

I saw it on a recent repeat.

Phew!!

Thanks Hippy I was wondering how to wriggle out of that one.

Phil.

Metal Hippy™ - 20/2/03 at 01:32 PM

You're an old git then...

Mark Allanson - 20/2/03 at 06:46 PM

We will never overtake TOL for the simple reason that people join just to see the scraps!

At the moment, some toff called "considerably" (sounds familiar) critisised the title of the list and all hell has broken loose, blood and fur flying everywhere, never posted, but it cracks me up to see the spit and venom.

Who is "considerably" anyway, he has got to be an alterego for one of the wisecrackers here, I recon he was having an arguement with himself for a couple of days in one thread!!!

Cats, pidgeons.............................

RoadkillUK - 20/2/03 at 07:22 PM

I've just posted the msg Here in another thread for all of you not lucky enough to be on TOL.

johnston - 21/2/03 at 10:38 AM

Metal Hippy™ - 21/2/03 at 02:29 PM

Sad thing is that I can remember larry the lamb and spot the dog.

philgregson - 24/2/03 at 01:12 PM

Just a worrying thought re: TOL

A bit of rambling comming up but bear with me - this is going somewhere.

It occured to me to wonder why this list is like it is and why TOL is like it is when they are primarily dealing with exactly the same thing and therefore, you would have thought, the same type of person.

The answer has to be one of self selection - Those who are friendly, helpful, witty (well almost), easy going and, it must be said, anarchic find like minded people on this list and migrate here in preference.

Those who are analy retentive morons find (and I must stress a minority) their like on TOL and migrate there in preference.

There are of course (before I get told off) a large number of ordinary law abiding LOCOST building citizens who subscribe to both beacuse of the useful info available on both but they are not responsible for the negative aspects of TOL.

Now on to my point:

Those who wish the demise of TOL do so at their peril as TOL serves the valuable function of keeping the Analy retentive element away from here.

(We in the Peak District call this the Matlock Bath effect - While the shell suit wearing masses are parading up and down Matlock Bath eating chips they aren't spoiling the rest of the peak for the rest of us.)

So if TOL were to suffer a demise they would all come here and spoil this one - Follow the impecable logic so-far?

So far from wish the demise of TOL we should encourage it and those of us who are not members should join (in a terribly patronising kind of way) to ensure its continued survival so that the anal retentives can survive in a man made environment (a protected 'anal reserve' if you like) of squabling and not worry the rest of us.

We could even take it one step further and throw occasional tit-bits of contention in their direction to keep them smug and unhappy and, hopefully, quell any desire they might have to roam in the wider world.

Just a thought,

Phil.

Too late, I've already found this forum and joined up . I was against this forum when it started - I didn't want to see the locost community diluted and I prefered an email based list. I wonder though if there's something personal about receiving stuff by email that sets people off on TOL?

I thought Considerably was quite funny here and on TOL. I found some of the responses on TOL disturbing, wow those guys are sensitive. Locost_NA is (was?) my primary list, but it's a bit dry most of the time. Perhaps Mr Considerably could help out ?

Locost_USA is just sad - there's really only the one owner/poster, and he's only there because he couldn't stand being challenged by other contributors on TOLs. Too bad, his ideas are interesting. I wouldn't bother with that one Considerably, you would get banned PDQ...

Anyway, after the latest TOL nonsense I'm converted (though still mostly a lurker).

Welcome Mike, glad you've found 'LocostBuilders.co.uk' it's usually a nice place with nice folks.

I think the main difference with this site and the mailing list is that with the list, the mail is sent you 'your' PC therefore invading your personal property whereas this site you can easily ignore trolls and timewasters.

I hope that made sense as I'm not too good with words

I've had a hard time killfiling all the msgs and replies started by 'Considerably' on TOL, I'm on the verge of just using the site rather than receive email.

Strange, I found it the opposite to you.
I could quite easily ignore the offending emails, or just delete them.
It was trying to sift out the useful information that was the problem! I gave up in the end cuz there didn't seem to be any!
At least on here you can go to the relevent subject and sub-heading, and ignore those you don't want to read.

I gave up TOL just after joining here.
You guys are a lot more fun!

Even Considerably has his place here, as the focus of derision.

Terry

stephen_gusterson - 24/2/03 at 09:23 PM

sorry, I should have added one for the end of the week.....

john_s - 25/2/03 at 12:17 AM

Give tol a few days to calm down again, then post something inflamatory to set them off again

John

philgregson - 25/2/03 at 09:37 AM

My point entirely - that will keep them happy, out of the way and provide entertainment for the rest of us in the process.

I wonder what the percentage of members on here are active....if you look in the members list there are a lot that have never posted anything....

stephen_gusterson - 11/5/03 at 08:05 PM

same with TOL tho....

when I told em what I thought of the bickering a bit back, you would have thought most of the 1500+ mighta said summat, but i think about 4 did - and one of those was an apology!

You need to go to 330 members until you find some with less than 10 posts, so thats not too bad!

I'll go for...................................ooooooooooooooooooooooooo.........................tomorrow!

Cheers

Chris

stephen_gusterson - 12/8/03 at 10:15 PM

yes.....i have been closely monitoring it out of interest.

as I write we are one short of being equal.

An answer to the previous post.....

TOL, over the time I have been on it, is full of nice people, and also complete to#$ers.

There have been so many bad attitudes and squables on there that its basically disintegrated from 1800 to 200 posts a month.

Just go back to the start of 2002 and see some of the bad attitudes and personal attacks.

This group started as a tiny bunch of people that are now grown into a much friendlier and helpful bunch than TOL ever was.

If you're refering to this Bob....not guilty M8. I am a British subject, and object to the term "limey". I know the term itself isn't at all offensive, but the intended reference is.

chrisg - 13/8/03 at 05:58 PM

No Rorty,

Bob the Builder's alter ego is "Mel Gibson"

Bloody sad

Real.

He's still a tw@t.

Peteff - 15/8/03 at 12:28 AM

Are we muppets supposed to take this from a bloke in a cardboard car wearing a lager crate on his head?. I think not. An uprising is at hand so beware.

yours, Pete.

P.S. the glasses are only a temporary thing.

None taken. It's the locals here, calling me a limey that gets on my tits.
Yes, Mel's farm is just up the road a bit from here.
Australia's a great place for a holiday, but I wouldn't like to live there.

stephen_gusterson - 15/8/03 at 08:13 AM

Thats NOT a beer crate - its a pukker cardboard helmet!

The 'car' was built by a professional (a teacher at my then 7 year olds school) for a school play.

Its pre sva, so dont need one, and is totally road legal. I could take a run up and down the street in it without MOT, insurance, legal tyres, or fear of speed cameras.

I can take orders for a production run if ya like

Septic tank = Yank = ????

Not forgetting the Italian tourists, who all seem to be in the way, no matter where they stand.

Looks like he's lost it.

I don't want to condem his film for it's religious content, I want to condem it cos it's rubbish like all his films!

Then there was the rumour about the hamster.
